Every Durga puja people wait with bated breath to see who

will emerge as Bengal's number one demon.

This year, a new candidate is quite literally heading the list

and he is Zinedine Zidane.

Goddess Durga's head is not in place yet. But the demon's

certainly is. It's Zinedine Zidane. Like the rest of the world,

the idol makers of Kumartuli loved his football but after that

infamous head butt, he fell right off the pedestal.

"What Zidane did in the World Cup final by head-butting

the Italian footballer was terribly wrong. I didn't like it. It

was demonic, like an asur," said Dilip Pal, an Idol maker.

The Demon Zidane versus Goddess Durga battle will be

fought at a pandal at Baruipur on Kolkata's southern fringe

and is sure to draw huge crowds.

This is not the first time that the idol makers have

demonstrated that they have an uncanny finger on the pulse.

"This time it is Zidane. In the past, we have made Osama

Bin Laden and President Musharraf. We do it according to

public demand, we get paid for it," said Babu Pal, Secretary,

Kumartuli Artists' Samiti.

While commercial and public demand may have turned

Zidane into an asur, the idol makers have offered the French

footballer some hope of salvation.

Next to the head-butter will be another Zidane idol with

head bowed and hands folded. If Goddess Durga is as keen

on football as those who worship her, then she is sure to

forgive and forget.

Kolkata, Aug 31 (IANS) The city police stepped in to ensure that no

artisan shapes 'Mahisasura', the demon killed by Goddess Durga, to

resemble India's cricket coach Greg Chappell in the idols to be

displayed during the September end puja.

Kolkata police, led by city commissioner Prasun Mukherjee asked

artisan Dilip Pal, a Kumartuli artisan to dismantle the idol of the

demon fashioned after Chappell. The idol was ordered by Deshabandhu

Road Sarbojanin Durgotsab.

"We have decided to keep a close vigil and ensure that not a single

demon resembles Chappell," said Pradip Chatterjee, deputy

commissioner of police headquarters.

"Our suggestion to all puja organisers is to follow this

instruction. Police will intervene if this is violated," he added.

However, the artisans at Kumartuli - idol makers' hub in the city -

did not like the cultural policing though.

"This is curtailing our artistic freedom. And if the authorities do

have such holy cows we should be given a full list in advance. Why

waste the efforts of an artist and demoralise him," said Babu Pal,

secretary of the Kumartuli Mritshilpi Sanskritik Samity.

"Can you do this to any famous painter who paints our gods and

goddesses with full artistic liberty," asks Dilip.
