Dear sri vaishNava perunthgaiyeer,

 

 

 

We were seeing in this series titled 'seethaa's learnings' how seethaa exhibits her 'lakshaNa saasthra knowledge' - her learning-s on the saasthram of 'beauty descriptions of parts of a lady and phalans'. When raavaNan looks at her beauty - divinity comes out first and then lust - alternating - and he expresses 'Is it that you are a goddess?' first and then 'whatever part of you I see, my eyes gets locked there itself'. When hanumaan saw her, that beauty struck him, and we enjoyed few slOkams how he recognizes that she is seethaa from that beauty of hers.

 

 

 

Has hanumaan been informed of that 'beauty of seethaa' by raama, ' hey, my lady will look like this this etc?' No such direct evidence in that direction is available in kishkindhaa kaaNdam, when raama gives that ring to hanumaan. There is no reference on that story of 'thilakam' also [having been said by raama to hanumaan].

 

 

 

After giving the ring, later hanumaan tells seethaa, "raama told me like this, which you two only know" - that as a significant point of true identification of himself for easy recognition by seethaa. But first he recollects what all raama said about her and her jewellery. Vaalmeeki places that description giving by way of a flash back - hanumaan recollects yes - raama told me like this -

 

 

 

vaidhEhyaa yaani cha angeshu thadhaa raamO anvakeerthayath |

 

thaani aabharaNa jaalaani gaathra sobheeni alakshayath || 5-15-41

 

 

 

sukruthou karNa veshTou cha sva dhamshTrou cha susamsthithou |

 

maNi vidhruma chithraaNi hasthEshu aabharaNaani cha || 5-15-42

 

syaamaani chira yukthathvaath thathaa samsthaanavanthi cha |

 

 

 

Meaning: Then Hanumaan saw the jewelry marks on the body of seethaa, whatever groups of jewellery of Seethaa about which Raama spoke, on her various parts [now since not available the marks are visible clearly], those jewelry charming Her limbs, like well made earrings, well fitting 'dog teeth ornament' and ornaments wonderful with diamonds on the limbs of Her hands, adorned on the body for long time, blackened and making marks.

 

 

 

[sva dhamshtrou - is it a dog's teeth? Or tiger - pulippal aabharaNam - svapaadha means tiger - means puli nagam vaiththa aabharaNam? Not clear]

 

 

 

Point: here that word 'cha' has to be applied better for a clear meaning - for if you simply read above you don't get that raama described seethaa's beauty first and then and then about her jewelry and marks they on her body.

 

If you do a little anvayam you get that meaning -

 

 

 

1. thadhaa vaidhEhyaa yaani angeshu raamO anvakeerthayath thaani alakshayath ||

 

2. thadhaa vaidhEhyaa yaani angeshu aabharaNa jaalaani gaathra sobheeni raamO anvakeerthayath thaani cha alakshayath ||

 

 

 

Then a doubt may come - when raama told these to hanumaan - for that we have to go back to kishkindhaa kaaNdam - raama sugreeva meeting, and sugreeva gets the jewelry [which seethaa dropped during her abducted travel in the sky] to be seen by these two raama and lakshmaNa - see that slOkam

 

 

 

uththareeyam gruheethvaa thu sa thaani aabharaNaani cha |

 

idham pasya ithi raamaaya dharsayaamaasa vaanara: || 4-6-15

 

 

 

meaning: On taking and bringing the parcel of that upper cloth with the auspicious jewellery, "This, you see..." saying thus that monkey [sugreeva and by the side hanumaan is also there] started to show them to Raama.

 

 

 

thathO gruheethvaa vaasa: thu subhaani aabharaNaani cha |

 

abhavath baashpa samhrudhDha: neehaarENa iva chandramaa: || 4-6-16

 

meaning: Then on taking that cloth and also the auspicious jewellery, Raama became like mist filled moon with overflowing tears. [4-6-16]

 

 

 

seethaa snEha pravruththEna sa thu baashpeNa dhooshitha: |

 

haa priyE ithi rudhan dhairyam uthhsrujya nyapathath kshithou || 4-6-17

 

 

 

sa: tu = he but

 

seethaa snEha pravruththEna = for Seetha's friendship outpoured

 

baashpENa dhooshitha: = by tears blemished

 

haa priyE = oh, dear

 

ithi rudhan = thus wailing

 

dhairyam = courage

 

uthsrujya = leaving off

 

nyapathath = fallen

 

kshithou = on ground.

 

 

 

Meaning: But he, who is blemished by tears, outpoured in all his friendship with Seethaa, leaving off his courage fell on the ground, wailing, 'oh, dear... oh, dear'.

 

 

 

Point: here again the word 'pravruththi' means appearance, manifestation. Also snEham means love - not only friendship - so by his love he poured out her beautiful appearance, 'manifestation' about the jewelry making marks and thereby enhancing her beauty - on that occasion of seeing those jewelry of seethaa.

 

 

 

Dear bhakthaas of seethaa, you may ask, 'why suddenly switching on raama weeping over seeing jewellery?' leaving hanumaan seeing and identifying seethaa as 'yes she is'.

 

 

 

For there lies the evidence of raama talking about seethaa's beauty to others - earlier he talked to the plants, trees, animals etc, which these perhaps may not be able to appreciate that beauty of seethaa. [those slOkams of raama describing seethaa's beauty we will see later] but let us focus now on hanumaan - -

 

 

 

See how hanumaan enjoys himself seeing seethaa - or reacts in finding seethaa - 'dhrushtvaa seethaa' as he later says - and feels happy - let us also see that hanumaan - in the words of sree thyaagaraaja.

kanogonu soukhyamu kamalajukaina galgunaa - kanugonu

 

 

 

meaning: Can the bliss of 'finding' happen to even brahmaa?

 

 

 

[point: 'can this bliss' instead of 'the' for grammatically there is no word to show 'this' but can be taken as such]

 

 

 

anupallavi:

 

dhanuja vairiyagu raamuni dhaya galgina nathani vinaa - kanugonu

 

 

 

meaning: Except for the one to who happened to have the blessings of Lord raama, [who is] the enemy of demons?

 

 

 

CharaNam:

 

thanu vOkachO manasu OkachO thagina vEsham OkachO

 

niDi janulanu Echuvaariki jayamounE thyaagaraaju - kanugonu

 

 

 

meaning: According to Tyagaraja, all glories happen to those who have their body at one place, mind at other place, and appropriate attire at some other place, yet rule all living beings.

 

 

 

Just relish the krithi and we will see the points in next post, how the krithi is linked to hanumaan seeing seethaa.
