Its up to the individual person, background, upbringing and guru lineage whether they want to worship Shalagrama as well. Shalagrams are of course important to Vaishnavites. Are you Shaivite or Vaishnaviate? Or Smarta Hindu? Agree with you about "it doesnt really matter HOW or WHAT you pray > or worship as long as you are sincerely devoted"". However if one day for some reason you wish to worship Shalagram, you need to have tulsi on altar with it. Shalagram is embodiment of Lord Vishnu and Tulsi is MahaLaxmi.
