Since it is a phonetical language it is rather easy to learn. Making flash cards is one way to learn the letters as well as writing them down. As you learn the letters, you can pick up any scripture and begin to identify the letters within the scripture. Pretty soon you will be able to put the letters together and read little by little. Dear Parvati ~ I have wanted to learn Sanskrit for a long time, yet the several books I have purchased are very confusing and difficult to learn from. I want to not only be able to say it correctly; I want to be able to understand what I am saying or reading or reciting. Right now when I do a puja, first I read the Sanskrit verse, then I read the English. So it always takes me twice as long. Are there any good, basic, like "Sanskrit for Dummies", that you know of that would be more user friendly? I like the idea of flash cards. Any suggestions you or anyone else in the group has to make will be greatly appreciated. Thank you ~ Linda
Guest guest
Namastes and greetings from the east coast. There are numerous sites and free links available for learning Sanskrit the easy way ( although not simply Dummies series ), one can persevere and try out several, before making any purchase. I would suggest the large repsository thru the link http://www.advaita.org.uk and the series of easy to learn steps. Once you google and get to the vast array of links and webrings, one could filter out the too glossy or very verbose treatises. One could also look into corresponding with the local Ramakrishnan Mission unit or their equivalent organizations. If needed you can also look into connecting with India based organizations, whose books and CD are very reasonably priced. Jai Maa and best wishes for more success.
