ETERNAL GURU - 10

Om Namo Bhagavate Sri Ramanaya,

This had happened in 1991

After attending a drama recording at All India Radio, Tirunelveli I

was about to leave for home. Except my father no one was at home. it

was already 5 pm and it would take minimu 2 hurs for me to reach home

and my father(who does not know basic cooking even) would be waiting

for me to cook for him.

When I came out of the recording room, one of my friends in AIR met

me. Unusually, he talked to me for more than ten minutes on all and

sundry. I did not want to end the conversation and hurt him that I

litened to him patiently.

What he cooly said after 10 minutes or so was shocking. He said "OK

Ganesh, it is getting late.. start start.. buses are not plying since

some miscreants damaged a plitical leader's statue and mobs blocked

traffic".

I prayed within to Ramana Guru and rushed to main gate, where the

watchman, who is also known to me very much stopped me to inform

something to me. "Okay, Yegnaraman, I am in a hurry that buses are

not plying and there is unrest" I told him. "Yes, I know" he

replied just like that holding my hand tightly that I was unable to

leave!

Somehow, I got myself "released" from my friend and rushed to the

nearest bus stand. While corssing the road, a car stopped with a

sudden brake. When I looked at it, I could not believe my eyes. It

was our Company car and our General Manager was in it! The driver

picked me up and dropped at my home.

What is Guru's grace is the TIMING. Knowing pretty well the

approaching car from Thiruvanandapuram Airport with our GM, Bhagavan

stopped me first through my friend inside AIR and then considering

that still more time left for the car to cross the meeting point

stopped me yet again physically by another friend at the Security

Gate.

O my Eternal Guru, your grace towards your devotees is abundant. Yet

you don't take any credit. You remain unconcerned, show stoic silence

and cryptic smile.

Ramanaarpanam.

Dear Friends

indeed the Graces of the Guru are inumerable and worth of praises. But i´d like to point out that the Graces are bestowed upon ALL living beings equally, according to their fate and karma, and not only to those who consider themselves HIS Devotees (of Baghavan).

In fact, it is somewhat ironic that a Guru who came to preach Jnana Marga is object of such strong manifestations of Bhakti Marga! But again, all paths are equal, so no harm results whatsoever.

To quote the Master:

"Q: What is namaskara (prostration)?"

M: Prostration means "subsidience of the ego". What is subsidience? To merge into the source of its origin. God cannot be deceived by outward genuflections, bowings and prostrations. He sees if the individuality is there." (Talks, Chapter 3, pg. 276)

And to avoid deification of His bodily figure, Bhagavan has said:

"Q: Does not the Guru take a concrete form?

M: What is meant by ´concrete´? Because you identify your being with the body, you raise this question. Find out if you are the body.

Q: Is not Grace the gift of the Guru?

M: God, Grace, and Guru are all synonymous and also eternal and immanent. Is not the Self already within? Is it for the guru to bestow it by his look? If a Guru thinks so, he does not deserve the name." (Talks, Chapter 3, pg. 302)

Wise, wise words of a true Master.

Peace to all

Indeed, Grace is there for everybody, especially as Grace is what IS. When

one talks about Grace for the devotees of Bhagavan, it must be understood

that there is no talk of "special" favours conferred on anyone. If one turns

inwards, what he finds is Grace; only, people who have come under the spell

of Bhagavan are probably more likely to look within... And there is no irony

whatever in assuming the Bhakthi mode in our approach to Bhagvan. He has

frequently said that that Bhakthi is Jnana mata, ie, Bhakthi is what paves

the way for Jnana. And He always said not to differentiate between the two,

preferring one to the other.

Sharada

Dear All,

I am not qualified to comment on this, but I would like to reproduce

C. Rajagopalachari's brief comment on this, from his introduction to

Adi Sankara's Bhaja Govindam.

'Adi Shankaracharya wrote a number of Vedantic works for imparting

knowledge of the Self and the Universal Spirit. He also composed a

number of hymns to foster Bhakti in the hearts of men. One of these

hymns is the famous Bhaja Govindam. The way of devotion, is not

different from the way of knowledge or jnana. When intelligence

matures and lodges securely in the mind, it becomes wisdom. When

wisdom is integrated with life and issues out in action, it becomes

bhakti. Knowledge, when it becomes fully mature is bhakti. If it

doesnot get transformed into bhakthi, such knowledge is useless

tinsel. To believe that jnana and bhakti, knowledge and devotion are

different from each other, is ignorance. If Sri Adi Shankara himself

who drank the ocean of jnana as easily as one sip's water from the

palm of one's hand, sang in his later years, hymns to develop

devotion, it is enough to show that jnana and bhakti are one and the

same. Sri Shankara has packed into the Bhaja GovindaM song: the

substance of all vedanta, and set the oneness of jnana and bhakti to

melodious music.'

Dear members,

I don't accept the idea of CR that knowledge matures into bakthi; on the other hand knowledge is the culmination, requiring no further consummation. CR's speech is only intellectual, being unphilosophical. CR was more political than religious as can be evidenced from the fact that he did not care to see such a great mahatma like Bhaghavan, when he had actually come to participate in the consecration ceremony of the pathalalingam, on silly grounds of such an item not having been included in his itenary. CR was also averse to Ghandhiji meeting Bhaghavan for fear of Ghandiji abandoning freedom movement and taking over to self-enquiry. CR's conduct smacks of lack of spiritual understanding; he is only a man of literary attainments.

Dear Sir,

I put this extract up as a clarification. Whether CR was political, philosophical or neither is not the point.

The fact is that what he has written in that passage is of great relevance. On another occasion, the Maharshi Himself told Dilip Kumar Roy that bhakti was the mother of jnana.

The clarification is important, I feel. And not whether the person who said it was a devotee of Bhagavan or someone who prevented others from visiting Bhagavan.

As the name Bhagavan implies, He is above all that. To date, a devotee of Ramana does not try to convert someone who is on another path.

Anyway, lets try and clarify further the intricate relationship between jnana and bhakti.

Yours in Bhagavan

Nandu
