Guest guest
For any newbies who might be confused by this thread, please note that Devi Mahatmyam, Durga Saptashati, and Chandi Path are essentially three names for the same renowned 700 slokas on Durga's exploits. They are read or recited during Navaratri by virtually all serious Hindus of any stripe, and during any and all times of the year by serious Shakta Hindus. In my opinion, the very best English version is "In Praise of the Goddess: The Devimahatmya and Its Meaning" translated by Devadatta Kali. It includes invaluable notes, as well as a well-scrubbed Sanskrit (Devanagari) text and Devi Sukta and various Angas etc. It is more accurate than Satyananda's soulful but flawed "Chandi Path" and more poetic than Coburn's precise but soulless "Encountering the Goddess." You can find "In Praise of the Goddess: The Devimahatmya and Its Meaning" on our Shakti Sadhana Listmania entry at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/richpub/listmania/fullview/17SX2T24MNOH1 Devi Mahatmyam, Chadni Path, Durga Saptashati Since people have started posting various swamis' chanted recordings of Devi Mahatmyam, I would be remiss if I failed to direct your attention to Amritaji's majestic version, available for download as four mp3's here: The Chandi in MP3 Hope that helps DB , Puneet Gulati <puneetgulati05 wrote: > > Hello Dhirendra, > Thanks a lot for the wonderful link. > I just downloaded the 160page pdf containing complete procedure and all required strotrams for reciting Shri Durga Saptshati. > > I am used to receiting Saptshati by Chaman Lal, which has a very easy Hindi as compared to the one which I have just downloaded. Gadiyar
There is a very bad negative review by someone on Amazon.co.uk re: the book you have advocated. It appears that the author is not aware of the fact that Devi is in fact a Vedic God. She is first mentioned in the Vak Suktam of the Rig veda and I believe he claims that Siva is also not a vedic God. Reviewer recommends the Satyananda's book. I have bought your recommendation. I hope it is as you say it is. Apparently the author is a recent convert to Hinduism.
