Why two days- Janmasthami and Sri Krishna Jayanti? Are they same?

Please tell me the relevance of this second day Sri Krishna Jayanti.

Is it the same day..with some differences in Calendar?

 

1) On 16th aug of every year in the northern part of india as Janmashtami.

2) On14th of sept every year as Srikrishnajayanthi in the south.

 

Both days are celebrated as Lord Krishna's appearance day...why this

difference.
