I have heard two explanations from one of your godbrothers. One is that the erotic statues are there to please or even mislead Indra so he won't get envious of the pujaris in the temple performing penances and austerities. When he sees the erotic carvings on the temple the lord of heaven thinks, oh, I have nothing to fear from these guys.
