NAVARATRI

Saturday September 23, 2006

All Day

(This event repeats every day, until Sunday October 1, 2006.)

Notes:

Navaratri (lit. "Nine Nights") is celebrated throughout India during the first 9 days of the bright half of the month of Aashwayuja in the Hindu calendar. Navaratri is dedicated to the worship of Saraswati (Goddess of learning and speech), Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth and prosperity), and Durga (Goddess of strength and courage). It also commemmorates the battle between Goddess Chamundeshwari and the demon Mahishaasura (as told in the Devi Mahatmya/Durga Saptasati/Chandi). The battle lasted nine days and nine nights. Finally, on the tenth day, Chamundeshwari killed Mahishaasura.
