Guest guest
Namaste all. I happened to turn the shlokas of Shivananda-lahari today. And I halted at the following shloka, which brought to my mind the ongoing heated discussion of Samadhi, Yoga, Vichara, Atma-jnAna, etc. ghaTo vA mRtpiNdo'pyaNurapi dhUmo'gnir-achalaH paTo vA tanturvA pariharati kiM ghora-shamanaM / vRthA kaNTha-kshhobhaM vahasi tarasA tarka-vacasA padAmbhojaM shambhor-bhaja parama-saukhyaM vraja sudhIH // ghaTo vA : Whether (it is) a pot mRt-piNDo'pi : or just a lump of clay dhUmaH : (whether) smoke agniH : (or) fire achalaH : (whether) a mountain (of earth) aNuH api : Or just an atom paTaH vA : whether (it is) a cloth tantuH vA : or just a thread (of cotton) kiM ghora-shamanaM pariharati : Does it eradicate death (or sin)? SudhIH : Oh Wise man, vahasi: You are (only) undergoing kaNTha-kshobhaM : a wastage (an expense) of throat vRthA : unnecessarily. bhaja : Worship padAmbhojaM : the Lotus feet of Shamb hoH : of Lord Shiva vraja : (and) obtain parama-soukhyaM : immense happiness! Sorry folks, please let us think of this shloka from Adi Shankara himself while we delve with our intellect into the ocean of his works! PraNAms to all advaitins. profvk
Guest guest
Namaste all Sorry. In the previous post, in the shloka from Shivanandalahari, I missed to translate the following two words, without which the punchline of the shloka is lost! "tarasA tarka-vacasA" : by a torrent of words of logic! Now the full shloka will read as follows: ghaTo vA : Whether (it is) a pot mRt-piNDo'pi : or just a lump of clay dhUmaH : (whether) smoke agniH : (or) fire achalaH : (whether) a mountain (of earth) aNuH api : Or just an atom paTaH vA : whether (it is) a cloth tantuH vA : or just a thread (of cotton) kiM ghora-shamanaM pariharati : Does it eradicate death (or sin)? SudhIH : Oh Wise man, vahasi: You are (only) undergoing kaNTha-kshobhaM : a wastage (an expense) of throat vRthA : unnecessarily, tarasA tarka-vacasA : by a torrent of words of logic! bhaja : Worship (instead) padAmbhojaM : the Lotus feet of Shamb hoH : of Lord Shiva vraja : (and) obtain parama-soukhyaM : immense happiness! PraNAms to all advaitins. profvk
