Guest guest
Chakdah, ORISSA (Thursday , September 28, 2006): It's not just Kolkata which has geared up for the Durga Puja with unique pandals (tents) and idols of the Goddess Durga. The districts too aren't far behind. [see VIDEO: http://www.ibnlive.com/videos/22708/utsav-durga-sculpted- from-sand.html OR http://tinyurl.com/ze3yb ] A local club in Chakdah has brought in artists from Orissa to create the Goddess's image from 30 truckloads of sand. A team of amateur artists, who live close to the Orissa coastline, has been commissioned to do what they do best - potter around with sand and, in the process, create an 18-feet image of goddess Durga like never seen before. It took the puja organisers two months to collect the 40 tonnes of sand required for this purpose and 30 trucks to transport the raw material. Says one of the artists, Subala Maharana, "Nobody thought the idol would become so big. We went on making it and it became as big as 18 feet." The idea behind lifting a chunk of sand art usually seen in sea beaches and placing it inside a puja pandal at the Mofussil town of Chakdah is not merely to create a distinct identity for the organising club. It's also to send across a message that not everything unique in Durga Puja happens only in Kolkata.
