Art in Goddess Reverence

RudrAnI : - the wife of Rudra or the feminine aspect of Rudra.

Perhaps similar names will be Rudrarupa. She who assumed the form of

Rudra [sivA]

1] Lalitha sahasranama 269 : rudrarUpa : In the form of Rudra

Rudra is Isvara.

Or, Rudra, who drives away sorrow; or, weep, [roditi] because the

rain which comes at the dissolution of the universe originates from

his solar eye in the form of tears. The Sruti {Tai. Sam], "He wept;

becauce he wept, he is called the weeper [rudra]." The Sivarahasya

also says, "The Lord of pasus [jivas] is called Rudra because he

drives away sorrow."

or according to the Ch. Up[iII.16.3], 'The PrAnas [senses] are the

rudras, these cause all this [body] to cry out. "

The BhArata says, "To please, [his parent] the son of BrahmA, the

eternal lord of the

universe, springing from his forehead wept loudly and terrible," The

VAyaviyasamhitA says, "Ru, means pain, or, the cause of pain, he who

drives this out [dra]. Siva, the supreme cause, is called Rudra."

>From BhAskararAyA's commentary, translated into English by R.

Ananthakrishna Sastry.

2] Rudra is the form of Isvara in whom the tAmasic quality

predominates. Rudra means `one who weeps'. `He wept, therefore he is

known as Rudra, the weeper" [Taittiriya Samhita] The torrential rain

that comes at the dissolution of the universe is the flow of tears

from Siva's solar eye [siva's three eyes are the sun, the moon and

fire]

Also Rudra is one who drives away [dra] pain and sorrow [ru]. Human

life is subject to periodic pain and sorrow. As the flower blossoms

when the sun rises, as the ocean becomes agitated when the moon

rises, as leaves fall, flowers bloom and fruits ripen with the

seasons, planetary revolution create seasonal changes in human lives

also. But DEVI has the power to ward off their effects and protect

Her devotees. In this way Devi is Rudrarupini.

In Devi BhAgavata : She creates the universe according to Her will.

She protects it. At the time of dissolution at the end of the epoch.

She destroys it. Devi who causes illusion in the universe acts in

all three ways. BrahmA, Visnu and Siva perform their tasks of

creation, protection and destruction because of Her blessings. She

has bound the entire universe with the bonds of "I and Mine". The

yogins who are free of attachments, who desire Liberation, worship

Her alone, who is Siva and the Mistress of the Universe"

Extraction From the thousand Names of the Divine Mother, Sri Lalitha

Sahasranama with commentary by T.V. Narayana Menon. Mata

Amritanandamayi Math.

Thanks very much for this. It's my impression that the shakti form

has not found its way into representation as a murthi...
