Guest guest
What a pleasant surprise to see the beautiful and auspicious form of the Divine mother Maa Durga adorning the group page of 'advaitin' - for Devi durga is accessible by both 'saguna' and 'nirguna' upasana ! ( SHE IS ALSO THE FORMLESS BRAHMAN according to Devi Bhagvatam) DURGA has many meanings. Durga - " durdukhena gamyate" - meaning one who helps us to overcome "dukha" or misery or even obstacles. Durga - "durgati nashini" meaning one who helps us to destroy 'bad fate' (dur gati) There are many more meanings listed in Devi bhagvata or durga saptashati. The divine mother killed the demon by name Durgama ... She is depicted as a ship that sails us safely through the ocean of samsara -"durgasi durga-bhava-sagara naurasangha"! The divine mother rescues us from all difficulties- she is 'durgayai' or 'durgaparayai.' Another meaning of Durga is "fort" -a place that is protected and difficult to reach. Mother Durga protects us from negative tendencies like Greed,Jealousy, Arrogance, False Pride , Selfishness ,Lust , Anger , False Attachments , and the worst of all False e-go! Why is Durga called Mahisasuramardini ? In Durga Saptashati, Devi Durga is depicted as slaying the buffalo headed demon 'Mahisa' ; hence she is known as mahisamardini. What does 'mahisa' represent - the 'stubborness' in human beings. Have you ever seen how a buffalo behaves? once they lie down, it is hard to make them get up ! Hence the tamizh expression "erumai maadu." (one who is stubborn.). Mahishasura nirnaashi bhaktaanaam sukhade namah Rupam dehi jayam dehi yasho dehi dvisho jahi To you who caused the destruction of the Great Ego,( MAHISA- ALSO THE STUBBORN EGO) Giver of happiness to devotees We bow to you Grant us your form, Grant us victory, Grant us welfare, remove all hostility On This fourth day of Navaratri , plean join me in honoring our most beloved Sri Durga devi ! May she grant us Viveka ! Remember, she is not 'accesible ' by logic or intellect only by unconditional surrender or sharanagati tattwa! "tvamEva shaktihi paramEshvarasya mAm pAhi sarvEshvari mOkSadhAtrI" Listen to Durga pancaratnam at www.musicindiaonline bty the late M.S. Subbalaxmi . JAI AMBE DURGA BHAVANI MAA !
