The incident occurred Friday evening as the girl V M Saanu, walking in a water filled field slipped into an uncovered well, whose digging work was suspended owing to intermittent rains, at Kottila locality. Seeing the drowning girl,the boy K Hemant extended his hand to her, lying on the ground clinging firmly to a small plant close to the well and rescued the girl single-handedly, police said. The incident came to light after they narrated the story to their family members staying in the neighbourhood. Hemant, also studying in class 3 at the Kottila high school, was congratulated by the teachers and students for his act of bravery at the school gathering Saturday, his father, K Mohanan, a constable at the Pazhayangadi police station, said.
