Guest guest
Some Nepali Hindus and Buddhists say 'No' to sacrificing two million animals by Prakash Dubey 3 October, 2006 NEPAL http://www.asianews.it/view.php?l=en&art=7375 Lumbini (AsiaNews) A reform-minded group of Hindus and Buddhists has called on the Nepali government and their respective religious leaders to ban the annual animal sacrifice in honour of the goddess Durga, which can entail the butchering of up to two million animals in three days. Dasai celebrations to honour the goddess, one of the most loved divinities in the Hindu pantheon, takes place every year for ten days. In the last three days, about two million animals-chickens, pigeons, geese and even buffaloes-are sacrificed. Both Hindus and followers of Tantric Buddhism practice this age-old ritual. Until last April's popular revolts against King Gyanendra, which turned the hitherto 'Hindu' kingdom into a secular state, the ritual was untouchable. Now the presence of a democratic government has encouraged many reform- oriented Hindu and even Buddhist groups to call for a ban on the ritual [...]. Jaya Prakash Agarwal, head of Nepal Anubrata Samiti [...] told AsiaNews that [...] "I am concerned that although Nepal now defines itself as a secular state, the government is still allocating money for the slaughter of innocent animals. This year it has set aside US$ 250,000 in Kathmandu alone to buy animals to sacrifice in more than 700 temples. [....] "Some Nepalese Buddhists practice this sacrifice," added Bhante Satyabrata, a Buddhist monk from Lumbini (Buddha's birthplace). "This is horrible. Lord Buddha would never have allowed such a monstrous act." [....]
Guest guest
Namaste, Well it is a Sad and dark day in the world when the last Hindu Kingdom on earth becomes it no longer! I hope the true Hindus of Nepal will stand up to defend A very auspicious part of there religion! Dont Buddhists also claim religious tolerence? people in Nepal durring the Dasai festival that dont like to participate in the offering of blood sacrifices, Buy coconuts and offer those with no complaints to those that do! i think both acts are equally auspicious but obviously the choice should be freely given! im glad King Gyanendra stood up to such opposition on his last visit to the Kalighat Temple here is an excerpt from the article "KOLKATA: Unmoved by strong protests from animal rights activists, Nepal's King Gyanendra offered animal sacrifice for the second consecutive day Friday when a goat was slaughtered after his prayers at the historic Kalighat temple here. The sacrifice was made a day after five animals were offered by the monacrch at the renowned Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati in the face of protests by animal rights groups. Nepal's Royal priest at Kalighat Kamal Mukherjee said the king and Queen Komal Rajya Lakshmi offered a goat for sacrifice and that he had consecrated the animal in front of the royal couple." the entire article can be read here http://www1.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/14362509.cms remember Animal Sacrifices in kolkata were banned recently! hopefully more Hindus will do the same and end this Watering down of the Great Religion we know today as Hinduism! Keep it pure and untouched! Aum Shanti Ardan!

Guest guest
Namaste, and just for the record im not from India infact I have never been! although my ancesters are! and Im not Pro Sacrifice either but I have taken a vow of Vegetarianism for my own personal reasons that are between me and my Ishta Deveta! but I am how ever PRO TOLERANCE!!!!!!!!! and Pro the freedom to practice your beliefs freely and without persecution! Sacrifice has been apart of Hinduism and the Universe since the begining of time I believe Prajapati himself sacrificed himself for the universe to be, according to the Vedas! Arayans sacrificed animals and the dravidians as well! Hinduism is a mixture of both cultures and the denial and banning of such a practice is the denial and banning of our own traditions and culture! and probably a huge disrespect to our Ancesters and the Gods! but now adays i guess its more important to fit in with the society at large basically destroying your own religion!! maybe I will start petitioning for the freedom of religion in India! (to bad its for Indias own religion!) but then maybe not im not sure if my path will take that direction! but until then, im free to voice my opinion about it!! Aum Shanti!
