HH Bhakti Svarup Damodar Maharaj

It was with great shock and disbelief that I digested the news of the

disappearence of HH Bhakti Svarup Damodar Swami.I had to read the following

two lines five times before it sunk into my head that I won't be able to see

always smiling and joyful face of maharaj again.

I first met HH BSDS in 1972 in new Vrndavn at the janmashtami festival.He

had come from California.I had driven from Detroit.There wasn't much

residential facilities in NV at that time.So we slept in my car.I on the

front seat and he on the back seat.Maharaj was a very simple and humble

brahmachari.

I had met Srila Prabhupada earlier in June in New York,after which I wrote

SP a letter from detroit which he liked very much and sent to back to

godhead for publishing,and wrote me he would accept me as his disciple if I

wanted.I wrote back I would be happy to be initiated in NV at the

janmashtami festival.

So this time BSDS took me to meet SP.Sp was very happy to see Svarup damodar

brahmachari and immediately asked him how he was and if he was accomodated

nicely.He said he was alright and never told SP he had no place to live.He

did n't want to bother SP. Then SP talked to me and was happy to know that I

was the one who wrote him that letter.He called Shyamsundar prabhu,his

secretary and said this is that Janakkumar who wrote that letter.So he knew

me by my letter.

Every time we met SP ,I saw SP showered affection on SD brahmachari and

gave him special attention.Maharaj was so kind and humble and enthusiastic

like a child.We spent a week together going to SP every evening ,and then to

his Bhagavat dharma discourses.

After this ,the next time I met SD brhmachari was in Los angeles in

1973.When SP came to LA ,SD would be there every morning for morning walk

,and SP would use him to address the scientific community.SD would pose as a

mundane scientist and put arguments that SP would smash to pieces.At the end

SD would accept the defeat. SP called him Mr scientist.We would meet

afterwards and speak about our preaching activities.SD maharaj would talk

about his life in manipur and how he came to USA

Based on these conversations with SP ,Svarup Damodar prabhu wrote a very

nice small book called scientific basis of KC and this book was the most

popular small book to sell in the street.

I came back to India in 1974.SP spent a lot of time that year in Mumbai and

he would keep this book by his side and show it to whoever came by to see

him.He would proudly say Dr. Singh is an important scientist and he is my

disciple.

SP attached a great importance to preach to the scientific community and

gave all his ideas of how to do it to BSDS.He personally trained him.Even in

his last days SP asked SD to arrange a conference of scientists in

Vrndavan,which Sd prabhu did very nicely and he would come and report every

thing to SP and SP would hear the report with great attention eventhough he

was lying sick in the bed.A near relative of SD brahmachari died in Manipur

just before the conference and he was required to go there ,but he asked SP

if he should go or not.SP said "What do you think?" SD said if I go , this

conference arrangement will be very disturbed.I shouldn't go. SP was very

satisfied with such dedication.

SP asked BSDS several times he could arrange his marriage if he wished

to.BSDS said "No. I don't want to marry." SP was very happy .

SD brahmachari was by SP's side in his last days in Vrndavan.SP made him a

GBC member for BI also.

Later on SD brahmachari took sanyas abd became Bhakti Svarup damoddar

maharaj.He was always very polite,humble and attracted many hundreds of

disciples.He always travelled and preached,arranged many conferences.

Krsna arranged a sudden painless death for him.I am sure he has joined SP in

his mission wherever SP is.I pray to Sri Sri radha Govinda to bless his soul

and I pray at Bhakti svarup damodar Swami's lotus feet that he may always

bless me and recommend me to SP and Krsna to bestow their mercy.
