Guest guest
Dear Darren: I remember when I first started the breath of fire that I ended up reversing the breath: pumping in while inhaling, and relaxing while exhaling. So yes it is not natural in the beginning and it does get easier with time and practice. Here's a way to try and make it simple for yourself: It is more a motion of the solar plexus than the navel area. Bring your solar plexus in and up putting pressure on the lungs to empty them. Keep your airways in your nose open. The command of the breath of fire is in the solar plexus not the nose so that the sharper the pumping of the solar plexus the sharper the exhale. When you breathe normally, notice that the command of the breath is in your nose. Allow that the shift for the breath of fire to your solar plexus so the airways in your nose have nothing to do but remain open. When you relax the solar plexus, the inhale comes naturally. Go slow at first to practice these new muscle movements. Awareness of your breath will guide you to even your inhale and your exhale. If you inhale too much with respect to the exhale, you'll get light headed and if you force it too long you may pass out for a few seconds, so be careful!
