In the evening there was another calamity. Because there was no program, Srila

Prabhupada stayed back in his room. He gave darsana to a few visitors. Then at

about 9:00 p.m., after everyone had left, he rose from behind his low desk to

go to the bathroom. As he stepped down the few inches from the asana, the

carpet suddenly slipped out from under him. He fell with a crash on the wooden

edge of the seat, ending up in a sitting position on the floor. It happened in

a second and although I was seated directly in front of the desk, there was

nothing that I could do. Helpless and shocked, I simply looked on as Srila

Prabhupada sat where he had fallen and rubbed his hip.

Amazingly, he uttered not a sound, neither when the carpet slipped, nor after

the fall. He simply sat with his eyes closed for about ten or twenty seconds

tolerating the pain he surely felt. Then with my help he rose to his feet. His

foot was also injured, but without comment he walked to the bathroom. When he

came out, he advised me that the carpet should be properly adjusted. But apart

from this he made no reference to the incident again.
