Guest guest
[] On Behalf Of Harsha Sunday, October 29, 2006 9:11 AM Self - From Avadhuta Gita from Avadhuata Gita: The Self certainly does not become pure through the practice of six-limbed yoga. mb: The Self is always pure. But the faculties of the jiva can become purified, augmented and energized through the practice of eight-limbed yoga. It certainly is not purified by the destruction of the mind. mb: The Self is always pure. But the mind may act to obscure or warp the ever present reality of Self. It certainly is not made pure by the instructions of the teacher. mb: The Self is always pure. But the teacher may instruct the jiva in the knowledge of Self. It is Itself the Truth. mb: It is itself Sat-Chit-Ananda. Sat means existence. Existence is Truth. It is Itself the illumined One mb: Be illumined. Guest guest
Dearest Michael, You are right, of course! Avadhuta Gita takes a radical nondual perspective. The ancient sages were well aware that the practice of yoga, meditation, and inquiry is needed for long periods in order to purify the mind so it is not afraid of its own extinction. One might jump frees one from gravity. But that one jump takes complete faith in the unknown and trust which comes only through Grace. So the meditation on "Self is Itself the Truth. It is Itself the illumined One" becomes a fact of knowledge when mind is absorbed into the Self and indeed becomes the Self. That individual identity which is afraid of its demise and loss, once it surrenders to the ultimate unknowing with only faith, realizes that It, It Self, is the Ultimate Un-Knowing and the Ultimate Knowing. The Beauty and Mystery of Life is Known by becoming the Beauty and the Mystery. It certainly is not purified by the destruction of the mind. It certainly is not made pure by the instructions of the teacher. It is Itself the Truth. It is Itself the illumined One Love to all Harsha And this brings to mind what is to me a critical point. We're not trying to purify the self that it may become the Self. We're teaching it to function only as it has been designed to function, and not in the omniscient realm of Self. We're not teaching it to become the Self, but rather how to die gracefully. The Self is the teacher, the purifier. It needs nothing. The self remains forever in ignorance because the mind is not equipped to embrace the Truth of Self. The mind is a cloud that dissipates to reveal the Truth. All paths lead to this dis-illusion.
