Namaste advaitins,

Thinking about the analogy of rope-snake, a question cropped up

which i thought i will share with you all and seek your views. I am

extremely poor in logic, having had no secific training whatsoever

either in secular study or shastraic study.

The snake is imagined in the place of the rope, due to the non-

apprehension of the real rope. Now, i try to see what caused the

non-apprehension of the rope. There is inadequate light; in other

words, it is somewhat dark. This resulted in my not getting a clear

view of the object lying there, rope, and imagining a snake in its

place.

The remedy comes when the darkness is removed by shining a torch on

that spot. The semi darkness is gone, making the spot adequately

lit. This results in the proper apprehension of the 'thing' there,

that is the rope. This simultaneously eradicates the mis-

apprehension of the snake. All the resultant confusion, fear, etc.

also ends.

Taking it to the Vedanta, my not apprehending the Truth,

Atman/Brahman resulted in my misapprehending the anAtman as my self

and the world, resulting in samsara and its woes. Now, would i be

right to say that the very non-cognizing of the Truth resulted due

to an enveloping tamas, ignorance, just as the inadequate light,

darkness, is the cause of my not apprehending the real thing, the

rope?

The remedy comes when through Vedanta shravana, etc. i rightly

apprehend the Truth resulting in the instantaneous eradication of

the misapprehension, duality and giving me liberation. What i am

trying to say is: This right perception resulting from Vedanta

shravana, etc. is had only by/after eradicating the basic tamas in

me. This is because it is this tamas that prevented me from the

right perception originally.

Would the interested members share their thoughts on the details of

the above proposal, largely from the logical angle?

With humble pranams to all,

subbu

Om Tat Sat
