Hare Krsna,

Pranams.

All glories to Srila PRabhupada.

Can anyone assist in providing sastric quotes stating whether or not gayatri

mantra should be spoken, whispered, chanted or sung loudly or in public?

I have quotes from the Vedabase on the subject and am interested in other

sources, for example eg Six Goswamis literature.

Pamho.AGTSP.

The Gayatri mantra can give variety of results. Also the Deities of Brahma

Gayatri are described to be from Surya, Agni, Brahman, to Surya Narayana

and also Radha Krishna. So unless given by a pure devotee Acarya the

Gayatri can give only artha, dharma, kama, moksha.

If one is empowered by a bona fide Guru then he will chant Gayatri in a

specific way which is given by the parampara. But its not good to chant

ones mantra aloud, as it is said that one should hide his relationship

with guru, istha deva, mantra, japa etc.

There is a story of a person who got Maha Mantra from guru, but then heard

that even fisherman and all kinds of people chant this mantra. Then he lost

the faith and thought this mantra is nothing special. But then the guru

gave him a jewel and fisherman said its not heavy enought to be of help to

catch the fish.In same way the mood in which the gayatri is chanted is

secretly given to the disciple by transfering it in the parampara. This

special mood is realized once chanted purely.
