Guest guest
I seek your permission to start disussion on soundarya lahiri, similar to the bhavaniammma sthuthi and thirumurai series. The idea is to present one of the verses each week and have dicussions on the lyrical quality, content, bijaksharams and the hidden tantric meaning. I am giving the first verse below.I seek divine biessing of mother, inspiration from Adi sankara and pranams to all the learned persons and sadhakas comprising this group. SHIVAH SHAKTYA YUKTOU YADBHAVATI SHAKTAH PRABHAVITUM NACHEDEVAM DEVO NAKHALUKUSHALAH SPANDITUMAPI ATASTVAMARADHYAM HARIHARA VIRINCADHIBIRAPI PRANATUM STOTUMVA KATHAMATKRUTAPUNYA PRABHAVATI only when shiva's unision with shakti happens, power manifests.when it is not so,the supreme god(paramashiva) is unable to move even a piece of straw. No wonder that Hari,Hara ,Brahma and others prostate before you (shakti).I am fortunate that i am enabled to express my devotion to you (through these verses) may be,due to some great deeds or puja i must have done in my previous lives. Ah! How wonderful. Please do... Ive been thinking about this at the same time : what should I start once the BhavAniNAma Sahasra Stutih ends. Somebody did suggest Lalitha trisati and promise to send me the commentary but ive not receive any as yet. I have several in mind : Kali Sahasranama and only two days ago been thinking about Soundarya Lahiri. Somebody did post them but long time ago when we're at the club. How nice to recommence it again since now we have grown. Alternatively I have the PaNcastavi : The pentad of Hyms of Kundaliniyoga. For those who never heard of the PaNcastavi : is a pentad of devotional hymns sung in praise of ParAbhttArikA MahAtripurasundari. It is said that during his glorious visit to Kashmir Adi Sankara was impressed with these hymns recited by a Kashmiri Pandit. Sooo if there is no objections I might like to commence on this too. How nice if it runs parallel with the Soundarya lahiri. Im being told, PaNcastavi is actually a shorter version of SL.
Guest guest
Thanks.I initiate discussion on the first verse. The 1st line"SHIVA SHAKTYAYUKTO YADI BHAVATI SHATAH PRABHAVITUM" --establishes the supremacy of Shakti --Theoretical physics postulates a universe whose entire mass was concentrated at one point and then evolved into the present configuration.Among infinite number of probable paths the evolution followed a path that led to the present configuration including a planet with conditions suitable for life. One has to accept that there is some guiding force(shakti responsible for this evolution. The vast diversity-very active stars to black holes, himalayas to depths of pacific, microbes to large animals- is LEELA,a play or an entertainment for this force. --Adi Sankara in Dakshinamurty stotra says"Beejaswantarivankuro jagadidam.....".The world is analogous to the plant in the seed. The seed becomes a plant due to growth impulse, nutrients etc. Therefore the manifestation of a plant from seed is due to the loving care of the mother who protects life and allows growth. The universe is seen, felt and observed only because of this manifestation. The last line".......MA KRUTA PUNYAH PRABHAVATI" means the result of good deeds in past lives. It can also mean years of Sadhana, physical training and meditation which have prepared the Sadhaka for a glimpse of the splendour of divine mother. The Beejaksharam for upasana is KLEEM.The expected result of Upasana is Viidhhi(overall development?) Guest guest
It is a wonderful idea to discuss recite and discuss this work. I would like to make a small contribution based upon my limited knowledge and some recent studies. Perhaps not everyone is aware of the intricate structure of the verses. This verse consists of 4 paadams each of which consists of 17 syllables. This is the astyashthi meter. Each paadam has the same structure of long and short syllables. I do not know the name, but this structure is SLLLLLSSSSSLLSSSS at least that is my calculation. Trully a complex and marvelous structure that underlies the melodiousness of the verse. Cheap Talk? What is before me is the transliteration, english translaion, Commentary, Diagrams and an appendix on prayoga of The Saundarya- Lahari of Sri Samkara-Bhagavatpada. By Pandit S. Subrahmanya Sastri and T.R Srinivasa Ayyangar. In this book it deals with the fourteen aspect of Siva and the Sakti, interpreting the stanza from the following point of views : [1] VedAnta [2] Samkhya [3] The chief Deity of Sri-Vidya [4] Significant words [5] Their significance [6] Genesis of sounds [7] The Yantra [8] The Pranava [9] The MAtrkA, the Samskrt Alphabet [10] KAdi- vidyA [11]HAdi- vidyA [12] The PaNcAksari [13] The Guru , The Initiator [14] Candra-kalA I hope this will further our understanding. Guest guest
Thanks.I was thinking of scanning the page(giving the yantra) from my book and adding it.As I proposed,we can discuss one verse each week, compile all comments and add its yantra. We can also add the upasanna vidhi(as per one school of followers) if considered OK by the group members Austin Alexander <kalkin108 > wrote: Thank you for starting this!
