Great Distress -Greatest Distress

ATRAm-karai vAzh maram pOle anjuginREAn-ATRath thuLangA niRpan

 

AzvAr after having preached the world reg. dhEvathAnthra worship, Thirumangai AzvAr was in deep distress.Still in this samsAram, full of eternal problems and cycles.

Shunning and spurning this, Kaliyan longs deeply for release from this world.

 

He compares himself with

 

The tree on the banks of the river. The tree can get uprooted any moment during the flood.

ATram karai vAzh maram pOle-anjuginREAn 11-8-1;

 

The tree does not have knowledge so does not fear.After having obtained gnAnam from none other than EmperumAn,AzvAr fears, fears for this world.

This is the great difference between the tree and AzvAr. When it comes to danger it is same. When it comes to feeling of distress,AzvAR feeeling is

pathetic. that is why 'anjuginREAn'

 

He compares himself with the sailors who are struck amidst beastly winds

kAtrathidai paTTa kalavar manam pOle ATRath thuLangA niRpan 11-8-2;

 

The sailors on the boat fear death. AzvAr gets all the fears on himself. They fear death physically.

That is why ATrath thuLangA niRpan.

 

He compares himself with a serpant under the same roof

pAmbOADu oru kUraiyil payinRAr pOle 11-8-3;

He compares himself with the ant between fires on two sides

iru pAdu eri koLLiyinuL eRumbu pOle 11-8-4;

 

He compares himself with the tree leaves which are being felled by the shepherd from time to time

'idaiyan eRindha maramEA othirAmEA' 11-8-6

This tree is dry where the shepherd had cut it off. it is green where it is not. Likewise, AzvAr is mixture of knowledge and fear.

That is why 'idaiyan eRindha maramEA'

 

veLLathidai patta nari inam pOlEA 11-8-5

 

The fox clan get trapped in the flood

AzvAr is distressed not like a single fox but the grief of the whole group.
