*SANCTITY OF TULA CAUVERY*

Sri Parasara Bhattar, one of the greatest SriVaishnava acharyas has composed

an excellent sthavam called 'Srirengarajasthavam'. In this sthavam,he

describes every aspect of Srirangam in a grand but lucid style. An extract

from his work on the greatness of Kaveri:

The mortal beings on earth get rid of their paapams by having a dip in some

punya theertham (river). What do these rivers do with the accumulated

paapam? During the month of tula, all the rivers in Bharat get themselves

absolved of the accumulated paapam by having a dip in the sacred Kaveri.

Though Ganga has been considered the most sacred river, the only merit

attributable to it is its origin from the thiruvadi of

SrimanNarayanan. However, Kaveri has an endless list of merits. Some of

them are:

1) She is the last resort of all the rivers carrying the paapam of men &

women.

2) She protects the flower-garden of Namperumal.

3)She provides pure water for Namperumal's thirumanjanam and thiruAradhanam.

4)Moreover,she is always at the feet of Renganathan serving him and his

adiyaars.

Thus, Ganga has been relegated to a lower position and

Kaveri tops the list of sacred rivers.
