Sri Nam piLLai's vyAkyanam was clear that

-No restrictions can be drawn for EmperumAn's avathAram-s

-These avathAram-s are out of volition.

 

Sri Desikan's vyAkyanam further clarifies that

-the Lord appears in dvEva, manusha, thriyak sthvarangaL, vibhava-vibhavAnthara,vyUyha/vyUhAnthara.

 

EDu for TiruvAimohhip pAsuram

'nilai varambila pala piRappAi'

quotes Sri Bhattar that the Lord's avathAram being saulabyam reveals supremacy from time to time and the prime factor is rakshagathvam.

 

Then one may ask, what is it this ten avathAr-s and others.

 

Acharya hrdhyam sUthram 'munivarai idukkiyum-mun-nEr vaNNanAyum' NO.17

gives answer for this:

 

Though this particular sUthram is brought about by Sri Azhagia maNavALap perumAL nAyanAr to bring about the difference between sAsthram and thirumanthram, the following aspects are relevant for our discussion

munivarai idukkiyum

the fact that the Lord descends upon rishi-s and spells out certain works is stressed here.This is termed as 'AvEsha avathAram' and commences and ends with the particular task.

 

mun-nEr vaNNan

The Lord takes upon Himself avathAram-s directly.,For example He gave the thriumanthiram at VadaraiASramam.

 

The avathAram-s thus are manifold and endless
