Guest guest
Awaiting On You All (Harrison) You don't need a love in, You don't need a bed pan You don't need a horoscope or a microscope To see the mess you're in If you open up your heart, you will know what I mean You've been polluted so long But here's a way for you to get clean By chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see Chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see You don't need a passport You don't need no visas You don't need to designate or to emigrate, Before you can see Jesus If you open up your heart then you will see he is right there He always was and will be He'll relieve you of all your cares By chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see Chanting the names of the Lord and you'll be free The Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see You don't need no church house, You don't need no Temple And you don't need no rosary beads or them books to read To see that you have fallen If you open up your heart Then you'll know what I mean We've been kept down so long Someone's thinking that we're all green While the Pope owns 51% of General Motors and the stock exchange is the only thing He's qualified to quote us But the Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see By chanting the names of the Lord you'll be free
Guest guest
Anyone watch the recent PBS performance of Celtic Woman? Similar to Enya. I just discovered them last week. Incredible music. It seemed to touch the soul. Then again, it may have just been maya. Anyway, I'm sure they will be airing repeats over the next few weeks if anyone's interested. Guest guest
I got an old tape of Bulgarian Women that would knock yer socks off as well. The Romas aint bad, either. But its those Men From Mali that get to me as well. World Music, the best. But Canada (CBC) is much better, PBS has so far to go. CBC has Celtic, Roma, and Bulgarian Women, and the Men from Mali, for their bumper music. Roots and Wings, help me, gHari, is this show still on up there? haribol, ys, mahak PS, yall know what would be awesome, is that instead of lyrics, we could all listen to the songs presented here. It would be worth the price of admission.
Guest guest
Here it goes, my darkest secret, mahaksadasa exposed. I thought the pop group, the Bangles, were the best. Walk Like an Egyptian video years ago was the best, and I got caught recently in my old health food store gig really trippin on Madonna's Material Girl. There it is, Im not proud, but I am me. mahaksadasa
Guest guest
You mentioned Roy Orbison, Mahaksadasa, and he's probably my all-time favorite. He's the other "man in black", (besides Johnny Cash.) 'In Dreams' is one of my all-time favorites. I agree, one can interpret these songs in higher ways than in the traditional sentimental/romantic sense. Celtic Woman's debut CD last year was #1 on Billboard's World Music charts for 81 straight weeks, an all-time record. They finally got bumped from #1 by their own recent Christmas album. I never heard of this group until last week, but apparently they've created quite a sensation. One of the songs they do is a version of Enya's Orinoco Flow. For Enya fans, here's a free video performance of the song (no downloads required): www (dot) youtube (dot) com/watch?v=a88-Tyl1gkI
Sridas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba6qOsmjqpY How bout Deep Forest mahaksa. i've really come to appreciate musos who can capture the indiginous spirit of a place or culture. These guys like many world minstrels, I feel as Ole Tim Leary would say "play on the ancient genetic strings of the cerebral code" or somethin like that, it's bin a long time. sorry can't help ya with the lyrics, they talkin' in tongues. I think that is what I like about a lot of world music is they talk with feelings, not so much lyric. but, Somewhere.... deep in the Jungle..... are living some little men and women. They are our past.... and maybe...they are our future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWqt23kQzxk It must be the tribal instinct in us all. I'm sure there's a native somewhere deep in the 21st century homogenous melting pot of us all, just busting to dance with the elephants and orangutangs. I also thought you might a' heard their musical journey of the Pacific being a water man, I've got some sentimental attraction to these beautiful scattered tribes. Sridas
Also if anyone likes or has heard the versatility of Nitin Sawhney check this out he has some deep Indian groove in there mixed in our times, this fusion really touches me. There's a bit more of him at this link but not enough http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8pCGsFtKYo Mahaak, The Bangles huh! Interesting! preferr Loreena Mc kennett an even Buffy tho, I gotta ditto on the Big O.

Many of these bollywood epics can be laborious but this one held me entranced from start to finish. I can only imagine what our Nataraj Sri Gaurasundara's dance is like. It's worth hiring the flick. Guest guest
Yeah, the bangles are interesting, I think its the way they sang "way-o" that got me. Music is funny like that, just one combination of lyrics sung a particular way. Take Gene Pitney, fer instance. His songs dont have double meanings, 24 hours from Tulsa is pretty plain, hes leaving his girl for another, hes sorry, but thats life. No spiritual insight, just contemporary stuff. But the wall of sound on some of his songs gets me, cant explain it, its like the beat of Material girl. I like world music because the beat is captured. My greatest wish for this topic is to have you folks hear "Praise" do "its a brand new day", but the only way I can think of is to have yall rent the surf flick, "In Gods Hands, and listen to the very end. This song has everything, chanting, Praise of the Supreme Lord, world beat, a bonafide Gandharva Goddess doing vocals, etc. I bet the anonymous Babhru das knows what Im talkin about, cause I know he seen the movie. I also love indigenous music, from dijari dos in the outback to the best of gabby pahanui and auntie emma. Primal screams (not yoko, sorry, sis) are also cool, and the word Buffy got me, too, because I remember a live performance of Buffy Ste Marie 35 years ago in which she did a way out version of Cripple Creek that had thousands of folks entranced. She actually stole the show from EB and the Animals and brother Jimi. (Jimi took it back later with a Voodoo Chile version that cannot be compared.) Neil Young is way versitile, too. I remembering making fun of Crosby Stills and Nash. I made up a new chorus for them: "well, it seems we need neil young, it seems we need neil young, it seems we need neil young, now, its a long long time, before dawn." And the big O has always been superb, I liked his most dramatic songs, like Leah. For pure hard rockers, nothing approaches his "candy man". This is why t. petty liked him so much, his harmonica work is awesome. Reggae, anyone? Ever hear of Cutty Ranks? Ras Michael? How bout Mikey Dread? Didja know Mikey Dread is prominant on the clash's classic album, "Sandinistha"? Haribol, mahak in maya

bija
I listen to the windTo the wind of my soul Where Ill end up well I think, Only God really knows Ive sat upon the setting sun But never, never never never I never wanted water once No, never, never, never I listen to my words but They fall far below I let my music take me where My heart wants to go I swam upon the devils lake But never, never never never Ill never make the same mistake No, never, never, never Way back in the catholic school days once a year we had to run 'chapel'. Basically doing a small reading, play a song, and give a small talk. This day I played 'the wind' by Cat Stevens. This song used to take me far away to another place as a kid. Anyway, you should have seen the look on the old christian brother teacher, who was running the show, and the severe tongue lashing he gave me afterward, about my song choice. Maybe it was the 'devils lake' bit that got on his goat. 'I let my music take me whereMy heart wants to go'.
bija
I think this song still rocks hard too. Dont you feel a change a comingFrom another side of time Breaking down the walls of silence Lifting shadows from your mind Placing back the missing mirrors That before you couldnt find Filling mysteries of emptiness That yesterday left behind And we all know its better Yesterday has past Now lets all start the living For the one thats going to last And we all know its better Yesterday has past Now lets all start the living For the one thats going to last Dont you feel the day is coming That will stay and remain When your children see the answers That you saw the same When the clouds have all gone There will be no more rain And the beauty of all things Is uncovered again Dont you feel the day is coming And it wont be too soon When the people of the world Can all live in one room When we shake off the ancient Shake off the ancient chains of our tomb We will all be born again Of the eternal womb
mahak
Thanks bija. When I was Lyric hunting, I tried and tried to find some of the cats songs, like moon shadow and boy with the moon and star in his head. He was so great, and I have heard that hes coming out of "retirement". I remember in the honolulu temple in the good days under goursundaras guidance, we did chanting to "the boy with the moon and star in his head". Such a soulful tune. The old temple there sure had nice tunes, and while there are those who criticized contemporary tunes (Prabhupada wanted the traditional, but also approved of what we were doing as well), it had effect, because 35 years later, when I hear the contemporary songs, hairs stand up and tears well in my eyes, because I hear Hare Krsna, and I see Prabhupada.. To this day, I cant listen to the soundtrack of Dylans "Pat Garett and Billy thye KId" without going into emotional trance. Thanks for the cat lyrics, and for reviving this topic, bija. Any comments on the ol tunes, babhru das? Hare krsna, ys, mahaksadasa

bija
Wartime Prayers http://www.paulsimon.com/player.php Prayers offered in times of peace are silent conversations, Appeals for love or loves release, in private invocations. But all that is changed now, Gone like a memory from the day before the fires. People hungry for the voice of God Hear lunatics and liars Wartime prayers, wartime prayers In every language spoken, For every family scattered and broken. Because you cannot walk with the holy, If you're just a halfway decent man. But I don't pretend that I'm a mastermind With a genious marketing plan. I'm trying to tap into some wisdom, Even a little drop would do. I want to rid my heart of envy And cleanse my soul of rage Before I'm through. Times are hard, hard times, But everybody knows all about hard times. The thing is, what are you gonna do? Will you cry? And try to muscle through? And try to rearrange your stuff? But when the wounds are deep enough, And it's all that we can bear, We wrap ourselves in prayer. A mother murmurs in twilight sleep And draws her babies closer. With hush-a-bies for sleepy eyes, And kisses on the shoulder. To drive away despair She sends a wartime prayer.
bija
(Presence of the Lord) I have finally found a way to live Just like I never could before. I know that I don't have much to give, But I can open any door. Everybody knows the secret, Everybody knows the score. I have finally found a way to live In the color of the Lord. I have finally found a place to live Just like I never could before. And I know I don't have much to give, But soon I'll open any door. Everybody knows the secret, Everybody knows the score. I have finally found a place to live In the presence of the Lord. In the presence of the Lord. I have finally found a way to live Just like I never could before. And I know I don't have much to give, But I can open any door. Everybody knows the secret, I said everybody knows the score. I have finally found a way to live In the color of the Lord. Guest guest
Wake Me Up on Judgment Day (Steve Winwood) The story goes, the truth is no one knows A stranger came, a man who lost his name At night he tells me his tale, prison, women, wail The took him in, he let them win Over and over He said if you don't have good words to say Don't wake me up until the Judgment Day 'Cause if nothing is the way it seems Then this life is just a haunted dream And all this love is just falling down through the years And oh, I'd rather sleep Wake me up on Judgment Day Let me hear golden trumpets play Give me life where nothing fails Not a dream in a wishing well A man in tattered clothes, crying all he knows The darkness grows, that's how it goes Over and over He said I think of the beauty I've had And all it does is make me feel so bad First they make you think you're riding high Then they toss you off in the sky And all this life is just falling down through the years And oh, I'd rather sleep Wake me up on Judgment Day Let me hear golden trumpets play Give me life where nothing fails Not a dream in a wishing well Say a prayer for the stranger Listen to the stranger Wake me up on Judgment Day Let me hear golden trumpets play Give me life where nothing fails Not a dream in a wishing well
Guest guest
Higher Love (Winwood/Jennings) Think about it, there must be higher love Down in the heart or hidden in the stars above Without it, life is a wasted time Look inside your heart, I'll look inside mine Things look so bad everywhere In this whole world, what is fair? We walk blind and we try to see Falling behind in what could be Bring me a higher love Bring me a higher love Bring me a higher love Where's that higher love I keep thinking of? Worlds are turning and we're just hanging on Facing our fear and standing out there alone A yearning, and it's real to me There must be someone who's feeling for me Things look so bad everywhere In this whole world, what is fair? We walk blind and we try to see Falling behind in what could be Bring me a higher love Bring me a higher love Bring me a higher love Where's that higher love I keep thinking of? Bring me a higher love Bring me a higher love Bring be a higher love I could rise above on a higher love I will wait for it I'm not too late for it Until then, I'll sing my song To cheer the night along Bring it...Oh bring it... I could light the night up with my soul on fire I could make the sun shine from pure desire Let me feel that love come over me Let me feel how strong it could be Bring me a higher love Bring me a higher love Bring me a higher love Where's that higher love I keep thinking of? Guest guest
By Leonard and Buffy God is alive; Magic is afoot God is alive; Magic is afoot God is afoot; Magic is alive Alive is afoot..... Magic never died. God never sickened; many poor men lied many sick men lied Magic never weakened Magic never hid Magic always ruled God is afoot God never died. God was ruler though his funeral lengthened Though his mourners thickened Magic never fled Though his shrouds were hoisted the naked God did live Though his words were twisted the naked Magic thrived Though his death was published round and round the world the heart did not believe Many hurt men wondered many struck men bled Magic never faltered Magic always led. Many stones were rolled but God would not lie down Many wild men lied many fat men listened Though they offered stones Magic still was fed Though they locked their coffers God was always served. 2.. Magic is afoot. God rules. Alive is afoot. Alive is in command. Many weak men hungered Many strong men thrived Though they boasted solitude God was at their side Nor the dreamer in his cell nor the captain on the hill Magic is alive Though his death was pardoned round and round the world the heart did not believe. Though laws were carved in marble they could not shelter men Though altars built in parliaments they could not order men Police arrested Magic and Magic went with them, for Magic loves the hungry. But Magic would not tarry it moves from arm to arm it would not stay with them Magic is afoot it cannot come to harm it rests in an empty palm it spawns in an empty mind but Magic is no instrument Magic is the end. Many men drove Magic but Magic stayed behind Many strong men lied they only passed through Magic and out the other side Many weak men lied they came to God in secret and though they left him nourished they would not say who healed Though mountains danced before them they said that God was dead Though his shrouds were hoisted the naked God did live 3... This I mean to whisper to my mind This I mean to laugh with in my mind This I mean my mind to serve 'til service is but Magic moving through the world and mind itself is Magic coursing through the flesh and flesh itself is Magic dancing on a clock and time itself the magic length of God. Guest guest
Not dark yet by bob dylan Shadows are falling and I been here all day Its too hot to sleep and time is running away Feel like my soul has turned into steel Ive still got the scars that the sun/son? didnt/let me? heal Theres not even room enough to be anywhere Its not dark yet, but its getting there Well my sense of humanity is going down the drain Behind every beautiful thing, theres been some kind of pain She wrote me a letter and she wrote it so kind She put down in writin what was in her mind I just dont see why I should even care Its not dark yet, but its getting there Well I been to london and I been to gay paris I followed the river and I got to the sea Ive been down to the bottom of a whirlpool of lies I aint lookin for nothin in anyones eyes Sometimes my burden is more than I can bear Its not dark yet, but its getting there I was born here and Ill die here, against my will I know it looks like Im movin but Im standin still Every nerve in my body is so naked and numb I cant even remember what it was I came here to get away from Dont even hear the murmur of a prayer Its not dark yet, but its getting there .... Mahak: Gotta do some dylan, he is the master at turning a phrase, any songwriter will recognize the master-lines he has come up with. Lines like "and the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn" or "and mona lisa musta had the highway blues, you can tell by the way she smiles". Master strokes. So, Ill be posting a few here, some spiritual, like this recognition of death at our doorstep, to political songs like my favorite nuclear war mourns like Chimes of Freedom and Hard Rain. mahak
The lyrics are sublime, perhaps my all time favorite of anything. I saw dylan do this in 1963, when I was thirteen, at a half-empty high school auditorium. Tears flowed then, and they do now. "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" by bob dylan Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son ? And where have you been my darling young one ? I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. Oh, what did you see, my blue eyed son ? And what did you see, my darling young one ? I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin' I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin' I saw a white ladder all covered with water I saw ten thousand takers whose tongues were all broken I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son ? And what did you hear, my darling young one ? I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin' I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin' I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin' I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin' Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. Oh, who did you meet my blue-eyed son ? Who did you meet, my darling young one ? I met a young child beside a dead pony I met a white man who walked a black dog I met a young woman whose body was burning I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow I met one man who was wounded in love I met another man who was wounded and hatred And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. And what'll you do now, my blue-eyed son ? And what'll you do now my darling young one ? I'm a-goin' back out 'fore the rain starts a-fallin' I'll walk to the deepths of the deepest black forest Where the people are a many and their hands are all empty Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison Where the executioner's face is always well hidden Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten Where black is the color, where none is the number And I'll tell and think it and speak it and breathe it And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin' But I'll know my songs well before I start singin' And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall. mahak
A close second. Forty year old songs that still pertain to todays newsflashes, how can one not give tribute to the genius. "Chimes Of Freedom" by bob dylan Far between sundown's finish an' midnight's broken toll We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight An' for each an' ev'ry underdog soldier in the night An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. In the city's melted furnace, unexpectedly we watched With faces hidden as the walls were tightening As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowin' rain Dissolved into the bells of the lightning Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned an' forsaked Tolling for the outcast, burnin' constantly at stake An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind An' the poet an the painter far behind his rightful time An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. In the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales For the disrobed faceless forms of no position Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts All down in taken-for granted situations Tolling for the deaf an' blind, tolling for the mute For the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased an' cheated by pursuit An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Even though a clouds's white curtain in a far-off corner flashed An' the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale An' for each unharmfull, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing. Starry-eyed an' laughing as I recall when we were caught Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended As we listened one last time an' we watched with one last look Spellbound an' swallowed 'til the tolling ended Tolling for the aching whose wounds cannot be nursed For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.
