Guest guest
I've heard various things about not practicing on both the full and new moons. I'm curious to hear what others know and what your experience has been. I try to be sensitive to my cycles and the cycles of the moon and am exploring this sensitivity on a new level. Anything you would like to share would be appreciated. Namaste' Diane

The moon series is a great apanic option to the sun salutes. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Iyengar has a nice series for the menstrual times which you can play with and adapt...check it out. As always with your practise what is best is whatever fits YOUR body and energy levels at the time. Have a beautiful day. Kaya
Guest guest
I asked Sharath about this, and he expressed amusement that the Western Ashtanga community has taken the 'you must not practice on moon days' as such a rigid mantra. He says the reason he and Guruuji do not practice on moon days is because, being Brahmin, they have so many pujas to perform there is no time left for practice. It is also nice to have an extra day off every couple of weeks. There are many apocryphal stories about people getting injured on moon days and those injuries taking extra long time to heal. Sharath does to those axioms. Having said that, if you do practice on moon days, and many people do without any ill-effect or injury, perhaps it is wise to do a gentle practice on those days! ashtanga yoga, "Diane Scobie" <enhe wrote: > > I've heard various things about not practicing on both the full and new > moons. Guest guest
Hi Diane, The text below is part of the Matthew Sweenwey´s "Astanga Yoga As It Is" book. It explains why we should not practice on the full and new moons. You should also not practice on the first 3 days of your period. "... It is tradition not to practice asana on the full moon or the new moon. The days preceding the full moon cause an increase in fluid in the body, an internal tide, and generally an increase in energy. As this tends to cause over stimulation, intense practice is not recommended. The days preceding the new moon (sometimes called the dark moon) cause a decrease in fluids in the body. As a tendency there will be less energy, the joints more dry and so an increased chance of injury. Of the two it is less problematic to practice in the full moon rather than the new moon..." I hope it helps. Namastê, Anis
