Sutra 7, 8 & 9.

Sutra 7 says ‘The understanding of Maya is the attainment of all attainments.” In Jnana Yoga, Swami Vivekananda defines Maya in Advaita as ‘veil consisting of time, space and causation.’* When Absolute God is seen through this veil it appears as Universe. In reality only He is. ‘Reality’ is that which does not change. It is always the same. There is no modification of any type in It. It was never born and therefore It never dies. Understanding Maya means knowing the Absolute. Knowing which, nothing remains to be known. There is no more any thought. Sri Raman Maharishi says that ‘all problems in the world are caused by thoughts, and if one thinks deeply these are in themselves only thoughts.’ Since thoughts have ceased, all duality has also disappeared. Only the Absolute shines in His own glory. Everything, the whole universe is only the God Himself.

Sutra 8 shows the path of achieving the Goal. It says by cutting the noose of shortcomings of Ego, anger, desire, greed, ignorance, attachment and jealousy we will be free from their bondage. And freedom from this bondage is Moksha. One way of achieving this is to see God everywhere and in everything. It is easily said than done. For making this habit of seeing God in all things everywhere and every time, we have to repeatedly remind ourselves of it and try to practice it despite several failures, till it becomes our very nature. What Sri Krishna calls ‘Abhyasa’ in Geeta. It does not matter how long it takes to achieve it. May be we have to take many more births before we achieve it, but achieve we must. That should be every Sadhak’s firm conviction and resolve. Success will certainly come but in its own good time determined by God. He is our unfailing well-wisher.

Sutra 9 says that there is terrible confusion caused by conflict between wisdom and ignorance. There is nothing in this universe that is absolutely good or bad, for everything is a manifestation of the Absolute God. There is nothing intrinsically bad. There are only shades of goodness. The base of every manifestation is the Universal God himself. Only the degree of dross on it varies. Firm belief born out of ‘Prakash’ (Illumination) that everything including himself is nothing but the Absolute God will eliminate all confusion, since ignorance has then ceased. And this is Self-realization.
