Indeed they are layers of subconscious awareness and energies waiting to be unraveled as all primal shapes of yantras are psychological symbols corresponding to inner states of human consciousness. Encouraging you to perform regular worship - with time your yantras shed dormancy to act as emblems of psychic energies, thus moving beyond "form" and "function", becoming "Shakti-rupa" (power diagram). When a person is spiritually enlightened, he/she may well become a "walking yantra" (so to speak).
