Guest guest
Hi Max I am an ignoramus in things scholarly, yet I think you are stereotyping Manusmrti as is the fashion today. One must first study the smrti, examine it from the point of view of the social structure amidst which it evolved, remember that manu codified the social, religious, spiritual, legal, juridical and ethical conduct prevailing during his time though one cannot gainsay the fact that he on his own could have added to it (but not substantially) and then only evaluate whether he spoke the truth or stood for justice. I unfortunately do not have the smrti at hand to quote to you several passages which are relevant till date and his contribution to jurisprudence or the legal system can seldom be undermined. I profusely apologise for my bit here, but I just thought lemme say what I felt. Once again, I am a half-wit and not a man of letters. Guest guest
Dear JR, I very much doubt you are any kind of half-wit! >One must first study the smrti, examine it from the >point of view of the social structure amidst which it >evolved, remember that manu codified the social, >religious, spiritual, legal, juridical and ethical >conduct prevailing during his time though one cannot >gainsay the fact that he on his own could have added >to it (but not substantially) and then only evaluate >whether he spoke the truth or stood for justice. He most certainly represented the values of the dominant group of his time, but more should be expected from a spiritual leader. They are the ones who are supposed to show us where the culture is going wrong. I see no need to go into the passages, including those punishing lesbians which prompted me to cite Manusmrti, that are based on social injustice, as I think they speak for themselves. best wishes, Max -- Max Dashu Suppressed Histories Archives http://www.suppressedhistories.net Real Women, Global Vision
