Namaste-

I was reading through the Chandi again last night and I came across

a verse that always gives me pause whenever I read it, or one like

it.

"And whoever recites the Chandi Pathah without knowledge or proper

understanding, his soul will go to the darkness of hell. Of this

there is no doubt."

I certainly don't claim a vast understanding of the scriptures, but

I would hope that if one is doing some sort of sadhana to the best

of their ability, for their own betterment and enlightenment, that

it would benefit them. The verse reads as though one must already

have perfected knowledge of the text in order to have the right to

work with it, and not only will the benefit be reduced, but they

will be damned by doing so.

Can someone please clarify the exact meaning of this phrase, and

others like it that are found throughout scripture?

Thank you,

~Devi~

Hi Devi,

This question gets asked by everyone who begins to study the Chandi.

Kind of scary, huh?

Swamiji has said not to worry about it. If your intentions are to

learn for the sake of devoted worship, there is no harm. That verse is

there for those who would use the Chandi Path for selfish gain.

(If that verse applied to all, the Chandi could never be recited. All

who made the attempt would be cursed from the begining...)

Jai Maa!

Namaste,

I think that the darkness of hell mentioned in this verse would be

for anybody using this scripture for impure selfish intentions. This

scripture is a powerful transformational tool for our own betterment

and enlightment as well as empowering us to bless this creation with

our highest ideals. To use this scripture to gain power or make a

money or other self-serving goals a misapplication and mother will

give them the fruits of their karma. It's so appropriate that Ramya

just posted a verse from the Chandi that Shree Maa brought to our

attention during last Sunday's Chandi and I will repeat:(Chapter 4

verse 5)"She is the Goddess of True Wealth in the homes of the virtuous

souls and is the misery of those who perform evil. She is intelligence

in the hearts of the pure minded,Faith to the truthful, and humility to

the truly noble. To that Divine Goddess we bow in reverence. Please

protect the entire Universe".
