Dear Tony - re Who am I isn't a concentration system it is a feeling underlaying everything - at the moment it feels like a concentration system - do i just continue and it shifts into the feeling you talked about??

Namaste Matt,

If you read Ramana, you will find he says more or less what I am

saying. That it is a constant thing not just a meditation tool. The

search is for the 'I' which one will find doesn't exist. If you are at

the reading stage then do more reading of Ramana particularly.

I am not a realised person so I have no right or authority on this

matter. My experience--- I describe as a feeling underneath everything.

That is the big 'I', which also is an illusion ultimately.....Regards

Tony.

Dear Matt and All,

This is only as I understand it, and is thus subject to correction....

Terms like 'Pure Consciousness' or 'Real Consciousness' (Chit) are just

other names for the Self (Atman), which is also referred to as Existence

(Sat). Another name for it is "Heart". And all of these are just names

for our true nature. Self-Inquiry is the path of inquiring into that true

nature, the essence of our own existence, as it wells up in our immediate

experience as the ever present sense 'I am.'

In the first benedictory verse to Ramana Maharshi's "Forty Verses on

Reality", he states:

i. Can there be a sense of existence without something that is? Is Real

Consciousness a thing other than That? Since that (Reality) dwells thought

free in the Heart, how can It - Itself named Heart - be meditated on? And

who is there, distinct from It, to meditate on It - the Self whose nature is

Reality Consciousness? Know that to meditate on It is just to be at one

with It within the Heart. (Lakshmana Sarma's translation from the

Sanskrit.)

The above is no different to the phrase, "Thou art That."

Sri Ramana points out that "I am" (Aham) is the eternal subject, awareness

itself, and that "everyone knows 'I am.'" (Talk 54). Hence it can never

really be an *object* of meditation. This isn't so much awareness *of*

'being' (which implies a subject and object) as awareness that *is* being.

However, we lose sight of the real nature of that very thing which is

closest to us through the confusion that arises as a result of

identification with the body-mind. Through identification, the Aham (I am)

becomes confounded with Idam (this) in the form "I am this..."

"I am this.." is another name for the ego, the aham-vritti, sometimes

referred to as the "I-thought".

"... this 'I-thought' is not pure. It is contaminated with the association

of the body and senses. See to whom the trouble is. It is to the

'I-thought'.

Hold it. Then the other thoughts vanish. (Talk 266)

Sri Ramana tells us, as does Sri Adi Sankara in his Advaita commentaries,

that the Self, Atman, Brahman, is not something to be gained afresh. It is

what we already are.

"The fact is that mukti [ liberation ] is another name for Aham ('I')."

(Talk 256)

"Aham ('I') is known to everyone. Brahman abides as Aham in everyone.

Find out the 'I'. The 'I' is already Brahman. You need not think so.*

Simply find out the 'I'. (Talk 266)

[* in other words, you need not think "I am Brahman" which is just a

thought, rather inquire into the nature of the 'I' who has the thought. ]

"...For 'I' always abides as Brahman." (Talk 202)

"... The existence of Brahman is well known from the fact of Its being the

Self of all;

For everyone feels that his Self exists, and he never feels, "I do not

exist"...

And that Self is Brahman." (Sankara Brahma Sutra Bhasya 1.i.1)

These Sages teach us that we only need remove ignorance (the 'I am the body'

idea) and the Self will shine of its own right.

Sri Ramana explains that the starting point in the path of self-inquiry

requires us to explore 'to whom do these sensations, feelings and thoughts

arise?'. The answer must surely be "to me". From thence inquire "Who am

I?" or "Whence am I?" Sri Ramana reminds us the question needs to be held

but no answer should be given at this stage as all answers come from the

ego. Also, we are to bear in mind, that that which is the source of the ego

cannot possibly be an object of perception or thought - which is the essence

of the benedictory verse at the beginning.

Regards,

Peter

It is heart warming to read your introduction. It

confirms my understanding that as one matures one is

lead to appropriate path.

Welcome to the list. Your contributions and

perspectives will be added blessings to all of us.

Dennis Waite has introduced several new series of

posts from senior members catering to those who are

fresh to advaita. May be this could all be collected

into a book form.

We are very glad that someone is reading these

introductory posts. We were wondering how far these

are useful and if there are really many beginners who

would like these posts to continue.

We would, of course, welcome yours as well as others

in the list that are keenly following the introduction

posts dealing with definitions as well as topics.

Sadananda-ji,

Thank you very much for your warm welcome.

Rest assured that the introductory posts are incredibly useful. I have

indeed just completed reading through the first five entries in your

amazing Introduction to Vedanta. Thank you for taking the time and

energy to help us beginners along. To say they are extremely

enlightening would be an understatement.

I am finding that, for myself, when questions arise in my mind in

reading these posts, they seem to be answered in later posts. Perhaps

that is why you are not seeing more questions. I do have one or two,

but first I want to read through them again and, if they are not

answered clearly for me, I will pose them as replies to your posts, in

an attempt to maintain some orderliness to this system.

I do have one suggestion: would it be possible to upload to the files

section those entries in the same manner as are the weekly definitions?

I think it would be helpful if they were located in the same place, so

that we novices can easily access them as we attempt to engage with the

vast body of knowledge being conveyed.

Namaste,

Neil

Dear Neil-ji,

Glad you are finding the introductory topic useful - and thanks for letting

us know! I am doing minor editing and checking the ITRANS representation of

the Sanskrit as the topic unfolds. My intention was to upload the completed

file when Sadananda-ji finishes the topic. I will upload the intermediate

file now if it will be of help.

Best wishes,

Dennis

Shree Neil - PraNAms.

Thanks for your kind words. I think Shree Dennis

Waite has some plans in terms of uploading the files

after he made some corrections. I am sure he would

take note of your suggestions.
