According to shivapurana, rudrasamhita, parvatikhand (trutiya khand) chapter 10, when sweat of lord shiva fell on earth, a boy was born who was raised by the earth. The child of lord shiva was grown by his mother earth's love and later he lived in kashi (also called varanasi) and did tapas to invoke the grace of lord shiva after which he was granted planetary status beyond venus. LORD SHIVA THEN BLESSED THAT THIS PLANET MARS WOULD BESTOW LANDS (BHOOMI), WHICH MEANS MARS IS THE GIVER OF LANDS AND BUILDINGS.
