I'll die but I will save all of you

By: Ojas Mehta

December 20, 2006

Even in his last minutes, bus driver Razzaq (50) proved he was a man

of his words.

Soon after he realised that the brakes of the bus he was driving had

failed, he informed his 54 passengers about the situation but

assured them that he would save their lives even if he had to die in

the process.

That is exactly what happened. Fifteen minutes later, he rammed the

bus, carrying Jain pilgrims, into a huge boulder near Kasara. Razzaq

died on the spot but the passengers were safe.

The incident happened at 3.30 pm yesterday.

Four passengers were seriously injured while 20 other suffered minor

injuries. They were taken to a dispensary in Shahapur and later

transferred to Nanavati Hospital.

The Chirag Travels bus (MH 04-G 5242) was carrying members of Sri

Vijapur Oswal Jain Yuvak Mandal who had organised a religious tour

from Ahmedabad. Kusumben Shah (59), a resident of Vasana, Ahmedabad,

who escaped with minor injuries on her head, said, "We were all

playing antakshari when Razzaq informed us that the brakes had

failed while descending the ghats at Shahapur near Kasara."

Kusumben said that for the next 15 minutes, Razzaq steered the bus

that was speeding down the ghats with its own momentum even as

terrified passengers held on to their seats. "Ae Dev no manas hato

(He was a man of God).

"He asked us to hang in there and assured us that he will save every

one of us even if he had to sacrifice his own life for us. We heard

a huge crash and the sound of the front glass of the bus crashing.

Next thing I knew, my son Dushyant (31) was thrown out of the front

window."

Kusumben's other son Saumil (38), who owns an electrical goods shop

at Vasana, said, "He used a milk tanker that was traveling parallel

to our bus to dash against a rock and save our lives. Had he swerved

on to the other side, the bus would have fallen into a ditch, which

would have resulted in a tremendous loss of lives."

The grateful passengers are planning to give some compensation to

Razzaq's family.

Hazrat Mohammad (24), another driver with Chirag Travels,

said, "Razzaqbhai was a very good driver. He is from Uttar Pradesh

and has three daughters and a son. He had driving experience of

around 25 years."

Please try to get his address so that we can make some contribution to the bereaved.
