Dear Poster (Venkat/Eswaran whatever your good name is),

For your sake, I hope you are following your ancestral advice and

dispensing free readings daily or most days anyway!

And if you are doing this sincerely, you will come to the realization

as to why you were drawn to astrology and why you are doing what you

are doing and how! Believe me, that is the plus point, the biggest

gift that jyotish-sadhana brings to you, eventually :-)

Be sincere and ALWAYS practice before you are tempted to preach!

I am nearing retirement, don't take personal offence ;-)

Hi PV Eswaran, I am not a professional astrologer and teased (jovially) a family that brought fruits etc when they came to me a for a general consultation. Having said that, ...

... you are touching up on an important subject; especially with a 'fire and brimstone' approach towards those who take money for jyotish. I can understand someone surmising (based on axiomatic principles of ethics, dharma etc) that collecting fee for foretelling is OK/not OK. But, since you are making some folks feel guilty/defensive/displeased, that too by referring to the very name of God himself, I think you owe them to at least the source -scripture from which you proceeded to write, "Lord Siva told them this is science of fortelling which cannot and should not be charged ." One can look into the authenticity/merits of such a Purana (if it exists) later, since, I wonder why, "Lord Siva told them this is science of fortelling which cannot and should not be charged .the day you charge it your knowledge diminished slowly and suddenly" ? Why did Siva bother to discuss Karthikeya and Brahma fee-collection? Although, I like the term "slowly and suddenly"- reminds me of a

Jewish proverb-hasten slowly!

Also, you scare the folks by saying, "...so you have to take the some amount of bad luck of the person whom you tell." By the same token of karma (as per your standpoint), wont they get a chunk of good luck of the patron too?

I sincerely beleive that we need a better authority on these matters although for you, your great grandpa may be the ultimate authority, to quote your words, " my great grandpa passed to my grandma and to my mother and to me." Just like you dont share the (monetary) wealth that he passed on to you with us, pl. dont share this putative/dubious "esoteric wealth" either. What he said is perhaps for your family- I dont want to offend him. But pl. stop and think before lashing out at people with your startling "0.0001% accuracy" statistic.

This is just a request,

And wish you prosperous 2007 too!

****************************************************************************

The following portion is addressed to all:

I am curious to know how the sages that worked in the field of astrology and the author of such a purana survive. BTW, since Jyotish is a Vedanga, it is fair at this point to say that I am talking about all sages. I have great reverence to sages; I do not mean any offence. It is also very much possible that some of them had some other 'occupation'. I believe that a fair portion of the sages were by and large supported by the society for their services in the form of donations or alms or both; all the way up the ladder to Sankara and Buddha. It was an implicit agreement that the sages would dedicate their valuable time, knowledge, skills, in short resources, towards the upliftment of society and the society in turn, would support their subsistence and good causes. It was a perfect win-win situation since we all would agree that someone too good at prophesizing or healing an entire society shouldnt be let go of his focus due to the task of raising pittance for survival.

What applies to great sages, applies to lesser mortals in that field too; they have a stomach too...

In the current society, such a set-up is non existant, in general. That's why a fee is stipulated up-front whether it be the services of Pujari or jyotishi or anyone to do with religion/veda(nga)s. If you talk about a religious master with 96 Rolls Royce cars or pujaris with a mansion and luxury cars or Jyothishis with such obscene wealth (?!), it is a different story (and one wonders how much returns a guy expects from Providence, in return, for patronizing such millionaires!!!)
