Guest guest
I need some advice regarding where to get a harmonium in the LA area, and what to look for in quality, price, etc. Neither my husband nor I play the piano, but I have played it a little in the past, and both of us have played saxophone so we are skilled in some music. Thank you, Sat Nam Har Kaur

Guest guest
Sat Nam: Ask your yoga instructor especially if he or she is a Sikh. They may be able to get you in touch with someone who has one for sale. Have you checked Craigs List or Ebay? Or, look into Indian Import stores or check with the local gurdwara maintained by Indian Sikhs, they might have a lead on one. The ragis (musicians) there might also be able to help with lessons! Guest guest
Hello everyone I have never heard of a harmonium before. I took lessons on a flute for years, taught myself how to play a clarinet, and have been fooling around with guitars since I was very young, but have never heard of a harmonium. What is it? Thank you Stephen O. SilverCloud20032001
Guest guest
A harmonium is simply said a portable organ. It has a piano like keyboard but not 88 keys. It is about the size of an orange crate (?) when folded out. The Brits brought it to India during colonial times to help with their church music and Indian musicians adopted it as an alternative to the traditional stringed instruments. They are now quite common amongst jethas or musical groups. Guest guest
Just to add some more info: jethas are musical groups made up of ragis (males) or raginis (females -- pretty rare in India but quite prevalent and/or even dominant amongst American Sikh jethas). The harmonium is hand powered (one hand playing while the other is pumping the instruments's bellows).
