We mentioned that the singular can sometimes stand in for the plural,

but use your ear to differentiate what makes sense or not.

 

Here is an example that does not work (this sentence is in a book for

teaching Indians English):

 

 

The merchants were shouting at the top of their voice.

 

"Voices" is needed.
