A recent workshop brought to light the awareness that the hand, like our foot must not be flat....flat hands will promote dumping at wrist crease...particularly noticeable in upward dogs, side planks, arm balances. Observe the base of the hand...it is fron the finger pads, the muscled area from base of baby finger to wrist bone, base of thumb to wristbonethat the work should happen.Engage these muscled areas and draw to centre .You will observe a hollowing at the centre of the palm and, one hopes, an arch or "bridge" at the base where the tendons connect. i have observed students pressing so hard at the base knuckles of finger and thumb that the finger tips lift and the entire palm is flattened ....thats gotta hurt ! two things less technical to try... visualize the hand as starfish in movement, or you can try conecting first and second finger a bit and third and fourth in a "spiderman " hand and actualy lift first and second off the ground, this will encourage muscular engagementand the palm arch. Also, if there are no watchful eyes, try videoing your practice and observe, even occasional mirror viewings can be helpful . However, if you can treat yourself to a mainland trip, splurge and have a private lesson ,one on one work is the very best...{i also wonder if you are locking your elbows, try upward dog with microbend back} . ok, enough already, good luck with the injury..great teacher that it is.
