Namaste everyone,

I'm new here. I have limited knowledge of Hinduism. I was wondering

where I should start on my journey of self-realization. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Dawn

Dawn,

The following two essays may be a good starting point for beginners.

Hi Dawn,

With all due respect to Dhananjaya, you should not look for general guidance

on the subject of Hinduism or Advaita at a very specific and limited site

such as the one indicated.

Sri ProfVK has a site with very many general and specific essays on both

these topics and can be highly recommended -

http://www.geocities.com/profvk/. You must also visit this group's own site

at http://www.advaitin.net/ where there is much useful information and many

choice links are listed at the homepage for the group -

advaitin/links.)

My own site contains dozens of links to potentially useful sites in the

Resources section - http://www.advaita.org.uk/resources/resources.htm and

contains essays on all aspects of Advaita from a very wide range of authors

- http://www.advaita.org.uk/discourses/discourses.htm. You should 'cast your

net' widely before 'zeroing in' on any particular teacher or writer,

assuming you do not have direct access to a qualified guru.

Best wishes,

Dennis

Hi Dawn, welcome to the group.

Alongwith Profji's website, the group homepage, and other resources already

mentioned here, I would suggest that you take a look at a series of posts

made on the other list dedicated to advaita i.e. the Advaita-L list. These

are freely available from their archives. Although the Advaita-L list

generally deals with advanced topics, for almost a month now, Shri

Krishnamurthy Ramakrishna has been posting an excellent series of articles

on 'Introduction to Vedanta'. These are simple, in easy to understand

language, with nice examples. These posts are archived at

http://www.advaita-vedanta.org/kramakrishna/. He has posted about 7 of

these, and I believe, from his first mail, there are about 40+ to come.

Also, I think your timing in joining this list now is pretty good; this year

has been dedicated to the novice and we have just finished with 3-4

definitions of terms, and Shri Sadanandji has started his posts for the

topic of the month which is also 'Introduction to Vedanta', starting with

message #34533, Jan 8, 2007. So plenty of resources :-)

Regards.

Veena.

Dear Dawn,

For Self-realization knowledge about any religion, whether

Hinduism or any other religion, is not required. But what is required

is a TRULY RELIGIOUS MIND. Next one should have a sincere and a very

strong longing to realize one's TRUE NATURE. In Sanskrit it is called

as mumukShatva.

The journey's starting point is yourself and the journey's

terminating point is also YOUR SELF. Kindly remember that knowing

about Self and TO KNOW THE SELF are entirely different things. For

Knowing about Self, there are plenty of books and web sites which

provide the required information. But to know The Self, personal

contact with ONE who has realized the Self, is absolutely necessary.

For it what is required is a very sincere and burning longing in your

heart. The Divine Reality will bless you with the required guidance.

MAY THE DIVINE BLESS YOU TO REACH THE GOAL.

With warm and respectful regards,

Sreenivasa Murthy.

Namaste Shrimati Dawn,

It is a delicate question that you asked (in message # 34809 of Jan

21), about where to start a journey of self-realization. The

question has prompted a piece of verse, suggesting one possible

answer, from an Advaita Vedanta point of view. Don't know if it will

be of much help, but the piece of verse is appended to this message.

Ananda

Advaita questioning

-------------------

Advaita questioning begins

where what is asked turns inwardly

upon confusions and mistakes

that one discovers for oneself

in what one currently believes.

Through such and inward questioning,

a mind that asks seeks clearer truth

which is more accurately known.

Where this investigation ends

is to be found by questioning

relentlessly: until all taint

of compromise has been removed,

from what at last is truly known

identical with that which knows.
