Guest guest
Simple ways to multiply through base numbers Mathemagic The vedic way-3 ---- ---------- Debmalya Banerjee Base and Nikhilam multiplication Last week we saw how we can find the compliment of a number. Hope you all remember that finding the compliment of a number is an essential step for solving multiplication problems. But before proceeding directly to a multiplication problem we also need to understand one more simple concept. That is "Finding Base of a number". The power of 10, which is above a certain number, is considered to be the base of a number. For example the base of 92 is 100. That means the power of 10 (in this case 100) is "that power" which is above this particular number (i.e. 92). Similarly, the base of the single- digit number 7 is 10. That means the power of 10 (in this case 10 only) is "that power" which is above that particular number (i.e. 7). Consider an example 99 into 99. (Nikhilam Multiplication) Base=100 99 - 01 X 99 - 01 ___________________ 98/01 n1 is the compliment of the number 99. 99-01 gives 98 as the answer (But this has to be done crosswise) and 01 x 01 gives 01 as the answer. Now joining them the answer is 98/01. In Vedic maths lot of times answers are divided into two parts hence that slash exists between 98 and 01. So this proves that the first step to solve a multiplication problem is to identify the base and the second step is to find the compliment of the numbers involved in multiplication. The same method is applicable for a three-digit number also. Let us consider an example. Base =1000 992-008 X 994-006 ______________ 986/048 At the onset the base was identified to be 100. Next we proceed to find the compliment of the numbers 992 and 994.008 is the compliment of 992 and 006 is the compliment of 994. Then the third step which is involved is cross subtraction. 992-006 or 994-008 whichever mathematical operation we undertake the answer is 986. Finally the compliments have to be multiplied. Another question might arise in the mind of the readers here. When we are multiplying 8 and 6, why are we writing the answer as 048? The reason is since the base is 1,000 and the same contains three zeros we are required to have three digits in the left side and hence simply cannot write 48. Solve the following 1) 94x98, 2) 7x8, 3) 93x88, 4) 994x997, 5) 995x999, 6) 92x99, 7) 97x90 Answers to last week's questions 1) 76 , 2) 4311, 3) 4313, 4) 5995, 5) 6000, 6) 013 , 7) 438761 The author is a finance professional as well as the youngest faculty of World Academy for Vedic mathematics and conducts workshops on the subject.
