Once someone was complaining about the hard time they were having with their boss!! Maa said "Make friends with him." She laughed and said "Give him chocolates" Sometimes people working together have disagreements and Maa has said to them to resolve it immediately and make friends! When I first read it, there was the immediate response 'oh, that's great, yes of course', but pretty soon other thoughts crept in, like 'but I cannot make friends with so and so, he or she is too....' or 'I would not know where to start, he or she will....'etc. But then, when I began to worm out these thoughts from under the dark hidingplaces they had quickly crawled back to, and held them up to the cold light of they, I saw that every thought I had, telling me why I could not make friends with someone, belonged to the army of the Great Ego. There is never a reason good enough not to try to make friends with someone, because those reasons feed on selfishness, fear of rejection, envy, and the like. Listening to them makes them stronger, and before you know it, you won't have any friends at all. The wonder-ful thing is that the very act of holding out a hand in friendship to soemone we think we don't get along with, means that another one of our negative thoughts bites the dust. It does not matter if our hand is accepted or not (although I feel it most often will be). Even thinking about it makes you feel better.
