Guest guest
tvadeeyam soundaryam tuhinagiri kanye tulayitum kaveendraah kalpantey kathamapi virinchi prabhrutayah yadaalokaastuktyaadamaralalanaa yanti manasaa tapobhirdushpraapaamapi girisa saaujya padaveem Your beauty (Oh) daughter of the Himalayas, to compare(it) poets imagine(who are) said to be(foremost poets like) Virinchi (and) other mighty(poets, but in vain) Whenever(one speaks of beauty) it is said in the world(about) heavenly damsels who desire(through) their minds (even with) penance unobtainable Siva like state. In this verse, the word Soundarya appears for the first time setting the theme of this composition. This is about beauty, but a beauty beyond imagination of even the greatest of the poets like Brahma. Poets need comparisons to describe beauty. They fail because there is nothing to compare it with. The most beautiful woman is generally described as Rambha, Urvasi, Menaka, Tilottama and others. This is the ultimate and one cannot imagine beyond this. These beautiful women desire to have a glimpse of Parvati. But the only way one can have this glimpse is oneness with Siva. This is not possible even with the greatest penance. Therefore this desire can never be fulfilled. Soundarya Lahiri is about Devi. But it not meant to be for direct meditation on Devi as Parvati. The devotees should pray at the feet of universal Father and Mother. This esoteric work of Adi Sankara is a result of rarest spiritual experience which enabled him to see and describe Siva-Parvati in their splendour in Kailas. He was blessed as a result of this experience with the poetic gift to describe his experience. The greatness of this poetry and lyricism are an inspiration to follow the spiritual path. The objective to emphasise that beauty and splendour of spiritual experience transcend any thing and everything that is obtainable in heaven or earth by money, power etc Yanta is a rectangle with long sides vertical. Bijaksharam sowh is in the centre. Expected result of upasana is the surge of poetic gift even in the most unimaginative and dull person. Another is gift to attract and seduce.
