Real Gayatri

I read in the aghora book 2 that the gayatri we know is not the real

one. He said that it is savitri. But the dhyan mantra, used during

morning sandhya vandanam is "balam baladityamandalastham .....gayatrim

naam taam dhyayet". It seems that this form is gayatri. Though in the

afternoon and evening the dhyana changes to savitri and saraswati.

There are gayatris for other devatas also. Then what gayatri is he

referring to?

I wouldnt take svabodha's book that seriously, I was given the first two to read from a concerned friend. I regard it as entertaining fiction...nothing more.

There is a Vedic Gayatri which ranges from the RG vedic tat savitur to the Shukla Yajur Veda's bhur bhuwah swaha tat savitur....

If you pick up mantra puruscharana or any so called "Gayatri Tantras" you will find varieties of different bijAs affixed to the gayatri. There is also the ajapaH gayatris as well; these are bijas which usually pertain to one murti of Shiva or one's ArAdhya. For instance ajapaH is used as a bija to bhagawan Kala Bhairava. Mahanirvana system saves it for the Adya Kali.

In its "tantric style" the Gayatri has shapodhArA, utkilana, sanjivani - similar to how the Bala's tryAksharI is awakened. Indeed the diksha is also similar since it is passed not only verbally but also by mudra, nyAsa and normal shakti pAth abisheka.

The student then also makes a variety of mudras [i think 13 or so- 8 are the principle mudras after japa], does the priliminary rituals.

Some also consider the panchadashAksharI to be gayatri's equivalent.

Actually I heard from a friend that there is a gayatri that vasistha

used and is actually different from Vishwamitra's gayatri. But neither

he nor the sastri who initiated him knows about it. Looks like even if

it was there its practically lost to us :(.

Sandhyavandhanam bashyam (From Sri Ramakrishna math) I have has a

footnote regarding gayathri and savithri mantras.

Gayathri mantra is Om bhur bhuwah swaha tat savitur.....and savithri

is Tat savitur....

On the vyakyanam note for Gayathri mantra, it states that since SHE

protects the chanter, SHE is known as Gayathri. Also, since SHE is

worshipped as Surya mandalA, SHE is Savitri.

Dyana mantra is completely different from stated before. It

is "mukthA vidruma neela davaLa...." which of course is part of

Gayathri nyasa. The book says, the nyasa can be used if the japa is

done by SangOpangam (sanga + upAnga ?) way (which owing to my lack of

sanskrit goes over my head).

May be if someone explains the term, will be grateful.
