As Shivaratri comes, let's share stories of Shiva in our lives. How

He has manifested His love and blessings for each of us.

Any stories and experiences, or any questions about Shiva puja, please

post so we can all bask in His love.

Also, let's discuss why we worship Shiva.

I have a story about Shiva that I would like to share. I went out for my daily walk one day, and during my walk I intended to look for a Shivaling, or rather an oblong rock that resembles a Shivaling. I mentally uttered a prayer to Shiva to help me find the right one.

Literally, as I turned the corner there right in front of me right under the button that I usually push for the crosswalk in a very obvious place was a perfect rock. It seemed way too coincidental. I picked the rock up and carried it to my house.

Thanks for sharing that story. When Shiva wants to be worshiped, He

will supply everything.

I hope you have arranged it on your altar.

Let us know how your worship progresses.

This explanation of Maha Shivaratri - The Night of Shiva, was on a

web site. It explained so well, I copies and pasted it.

Sri Maha Shivaratri means "The Night of Shiva". The ceremonies take

place chiefly at night. This is a festival observed in honor of Lord

Shiva. Shiva was married to Parvati on this day. This is the night

when Shiva is said to have performed the Tandava or the dance of

primordial creation, preservation and destruction.

People repeat the Panchakshara Mantra as it is said he who utters the

Names of Shiva during Shivaratri, with perfect devotion and

concentration, is freed from all sins. He reaches the abode of Shiva

and lives there happily. He is liberated from the wheel of births and

deaths. Many pilgrims flock to the places where there are Shiva temples.

Legends behind Shivaratri

Once Lord Vishnu and Lord Bramha argued over each other's prowess.

However, Lord Shiva challenged both of them. He appeared as a flaming

Linga and challenged the duo to measure the gigantic Linga (phallic

symbol of Lord Shiva). Lord Bramha, who took the form of a swan, and

Lord Vishnu who became a boar and went to Netherland, were both unable

to measure the Shivlinga. Then Lord Shiva came out of the Linga and

declared himself the most powerful. Maha Shivratri therefore means the

grand night of Shiva. The devotees of Shiva fast during this day and

pray to the lord throughout the night. This legend goes to prove the

supremacy of Mahadev over other Hindu Gods.

King Daksha, opposed Sati's marriage with Shiva. At a yagnya (holy

sacrifice) the king ignored Shiva's presence and thereby insulted the

latter publicly. Sati was so angered by this that she jumped into the

sacrificial fire and ended her life. Lord Shiva unleashed his fury at

the death of his wife by performing the violent dance, Taandav. He

wiped out Daksha's kingdom, undertook rigorous penance and retired to

the Himalayas. The Gods, who feared that the severity of Shiva's

penance might bring an end to the world, revived Sati in the new

avatar of Parvati. Shiva-Parvati married and this reunion is

celebrated on Maha Shivratri.

At the Devi Mandir, we worship the Shiva lingums throughout the night.

We perform puja and everyone makes the offerings.

We also sing Shiva songs and dance. We fast on Thursday and break the

fast 3-5 AM Friday morning. We stay up all night.

I did place the lingam on the altar. I began the Shiva puja a couple of days ago, and all is going well. I'm a bit confused by the hand movements. I am not quite sure exactly what they are.

During my first visit to India I was staying in an ashram where

everyone seemed to have an Ishta Dev. Although I had been meditating

for years, I was never encouraged to develop this kind of

relationship with the divine. I was feeling sad about this and

mentioned it to a saint I met. He told me I do have an Ishta, but

just didn't remember it. He asked me to hold my hand out. He held his

empty hand over mine, and a Shiva lingam dropped into the palm of my

hand! Shivaji has been dear to me ever since. Jai Shiva! Jai Maa!

I would love to share my Shiva story. A few years back, I was looking

at different mantras, then one day, came across the Mahamritunjaya

mantra and immediately knew "that's my mantra!" I got a CD and tried to

learn it along with the written text. I thought it would take FOREVER.

I had an acquaitance have his guru initiate me formally. I obtain

several different CDs so I could listen to several different people

reciting it. While listening to the CDs, I would feel a pressure in my

base chakra. After about a year plus, I finally was able to recite it

on my own. Yay! I later got a Vedic horoscope done and it said in two

different places IN BRIGHT RED CAPITAL LETTERS that I was/am under the

influence of Saturn and I would benefit from a MMJ yantra and reciting

the mantra. Of course, I had already figured that out, but it was still

nice to see it documented elsewhere. Then, about a year after reciting

it on a daily basis, sometimes for several hours at a time, I noticed a

nice energy about me that began to wrap itself around me. I asked my

friend who practices in the Siddha tradition in south India, about my

experience, and he said, of course!, you are a child of Shiva! He knew

that the first time he spoke with me. Sooooo, to make a long story

short, the energies continue to build and evolve and are now making

their way up my spine.

Om Namah Shivaya!

I know there are some video clips of swamiji doing some of the mudras,

but I don't know where they are. Perhaps someone else can link you.
