Guest guest
Nmaste Last evening, 20th of February, I asked Swami to describe how to become a disciple of Shree Maa. He gave a beautiful response and it has been recorded. Please visit the web site www.shreemaa.org and click on video classes and look for the archive of Bhavagad Gita, Chapter 15. Please listen to that, it should be posted today on the site. Then we can all have a great discussion. I do not know the answers to all of your questions, but I pledge to do everything I can to help you learn and understand how to make this commitment to the Guru. What I do not understand, I will go directly to Maa and Swami and return with the answers. You can also join the evening on-line classes and direct questions in real time to Swami, as they pertain to the class material and this topic. I will attempt to summarize a brilliant discourse of Swami. The highlights are: when you awaken and feel inspired in you heart of hearts, and trust that Shree Maa is a Pure Example of Divinity on this Earth, a Guru of Purity, Truth, and Compassion, then you can take the first step towards Her, and become Her disciple. This inner swakening is the initiation. It is a upwelling of love and a sense of awe that causes one to intuitively move towards Shree Maa. As if She is True North, and you are a compass. You just point towards True North. You cannot point anywhere else. To be a disciple, you should understand the words Guru and disciple. Guru means one who removes darkness, and brings Pure Light, and disciple is one who fully reflects the Guru, who becomes the fully reflective mirror of all the Divine attributes of the Guru. To fully reflect the Pure Light of the Guru. How to do this? How to become a fully polished mirror? The Guru Gita, a text within the book, "The Guru and the Goddess", by Swami, and available thur the Shree Maa website, describes the attributes of the Guru, and the ways that the disciple can use to align themselves to the Guru. So, now that you are inspired, you choose a practice, and start worship of the Divine, in whatever form you feel attracted to, and using methods teught by the Guru. Typically Maa suggests worship of Shiva for beginners. However, She and Swami have translated the texts of many of the Gods and Goddesses and you can choose from many different forms of worship. As the disciple, you must perform worship, or meditation, japa, puja, homa, kirtan, etc., these are the methods which help you to polish your mirror, clean and clear your consciousness, so that you can begin to reflect the Guru more fully. The disciple must discipline themselves, and thru the channel of their devotion to the Guru, the Guru's Grace flows back to you. The Guru is more important to the disciple than God. Why? Because a True Guru can provide inspiration, teach you techniques, impart spiritual and practical knowledge and advice, and ultimately, lead you to God. So it is important to learn as much as possible about your Guru. This is the most important relationship in your life, and as you would learn about your wife or husband or children, in order to grow closer to them, and to please them, and to help them, you also must learn about the Guru. The "Guru Gita" is a indispensable text for this purpose. When beginning a relationship with the Guru, changing your name, or your diet, or moving to a different city, or having some formal "conversion" service: these are not required. In my relationship with Maa, I met Her in Iowa while She was on tour in 1997, fell in love, wanted to know about Her, and serve Her. It was simple, direct, and profound. The more I questioned other disciples about Her,and learned about Her, the more I wanted to serve Her. But I lived in Iowa. So what to do? Well, I learned Shiva puja for beginners, and set up an altar in my living room, I started performing puja daily, and read the mantras in English. Daily I practiced, never missing a day, and after 6 months, I called the Mandir and asked to visit. She allowed me to come for Shiva ratri in 1998. I witnessed Her worship face to face, and observed her actions and talked to Her. This served to deepen my love and connection to Her, and increased my resolve to do everything in my power to become like Her. She embodies for me all that is Perfect and Pure on this Earth. There is no one higher to me. No one. So, I share these thoughts with you, and I hope and pray that you feel some of the love and divine energy that She shares with me daily. Do not worry about diet, names or initiations. Take a sankalpa, a firm commitment, to begin worship today, and, seek to learn all you can about Maa and pray to Her to accept you, and she will hear your prayer. In fact, She has heard your prayers, and thru Swami and me, we are posting this message, and you can review the entire discourse from Swami on-line. The Guru sets the course of discovery with each disciple according to their traits and needs. These thoughts are a general overview of the process. She is wonderful, full of love divine, full of compassion, full of wisdom, and she is only here on this Earth to help sincere seekers find God. You do not have to be face to face with Her to experience Her Grace. You erect a physical altar in you bedroom, and a Divine alter in your Heart. in that Temple, She will come and sit with you whenever you worship. And, over time, as you devote more and more time and energy to spiritual pursuits, She will sit longer and longer with you. Until, She never leaves. Never. Eternally with you. As it says in the Guru Gita, The Guru is God incarnate. The Guru is everything, bow down with your soul to the Guru. If you have further direct questions, please feel free to e mail me off line.
