Shyamji's wonderful post on Dharma made me think long and hard !

wHat is 'dharma' really ?

There are dharmas and dharmas !

1) stree dharma / pativrata dharma

2) kula dharma

3) yuga dharma

4) swadharma

etc etc etc Then of course overriding all these is the Sanatana

dharma , the eternal dharma!

Folks , what do you think

was Sri Rama violating Dharma when he killed Vali from behind ?

was Sri Rama violating Dharma when he banished his pregnant WIFE

SITA TO THE FOREST UNDER A FALSE PRETEXT upon hearing one of his

subjects( a washerman) question Sita's chastity ?

SO AND SO FORTH

WHAT ABOUT THE NUMEROUS ACTS OF DECEPTION SRI KRISHNA PRACTICED IN

THE MAHBBHARATA WAR ? LORD KRISHNA HAD ALREADY DISABLED KARNA EVEN

BEFORE THE WAR BEGAN - ( the sloka in the srimad bhagvat gita points

to this)

What about mother kunti Requesting Karna to spare Arjuna's life ?

Mahabharata war was not conducted strictly as per rules of Dharma !

please read what King Yudhistra tells Yaksha about Kshatriya dharma

The Yaksha asked, What institutes the divinity of the Kshatriyas?

What even is their practice that is like that of the pious? What is

their human attribute? And

what practice of theirs is like that of the impious?

Yudhishthira answered, Arrows and weapons are their divinity:

celebration of sacrifices is that act which is like that of the

pious: liability to fear is their human attribute; and refusal of

protection is that act of theirs which is like that of the impious.

So. before judging Lord Rama's various acts of commission and

omission , we have to see what Dharma Lord Rama was practicing at a

given point of time !

Lord Krishna in order to practice the higher dharma had to resort to

adharmic acts - sometimes the ends justify the means !

Lord Rama killed Ravana , a shiva bhakta - a true vaishnavite never

kills another devotee of the lord (shiva) ( who himself e is a true

vaishnavite ) to do prayachittam, sri Rama OFFERED PRAYERS TO LORD

SHIVA AT RAMESHWERAM , A GREAT PILGRIMAGE SPOT CALLED VARANASI OF

THE SOUTH ...

this may all sound senseless but For every act of Adharma practiced,

there is a dharmic consequence just as for every act of dharma

praticed there may be an adharmic consequence! Something to think

about!

love and blessings
