It is very difficult to get rid of Egotism

Jai Gurudev,

When we see something significant in our selves, it is a major flaw.

If we see smartness in our self (such as - I know the Gita by heart,

I have an in-depth understanding of the meaning and ex-pressions of

the Gita etc), or if we see spiritual goodness in us, (e.g. I

worship God, I meditate, I chant devotional songs, I repeat His holy

name etc), or anything great that we see in our self, it is all

egotism. By whatever means we find something special in our self,

that is egotism.

This egoism can come due to one's caste, color, creed, stage in

life, knowledge, intelligence and many other forms of arrogance and

conceit. It is different forms of pride that can lead to one's

downfall. Thinking that we have - good qualities, desirable

abilities, knowledge, smartness, articulation etc. is egotism. Such

egotism coming from goodness is dangerous and difficult to get rid

off.

With respect to "Egotism" it has been said in Ramayana -

"Sansrut mool soolprad naanan, sakal sauk daayak abhimaana." (Manasa

7:74:3)

All devilish tendencies, bad qualities, evil actions, operate under

the umbrella of "Egotism." (arrogance, conceit).

The more effort we put into getting rid of this egotism, the more it

becomes firmly established. The more ways that we find to wipe out

the pride and arrogance, the solutions themselves will increase our

egotism. It is truly very difficult to get rid of Egotism.

A spiritual aspirant must keep in mind that whatever good qualities

he has, are not his own, rather they have come from God. Being a

part of God, the Self (Atma) is flawless and without qualities.

Therefore those great qualities should be understood as being God's,

not ours. By believing and understanding with a firm resolve that

these good qualities are all God's, there will be no egotism. This

pride and arrogance cannot be rooted out by our self, it needs the

grace of God. On this subject a spiritual aspirant must remain very

vigilant.

Gurusevak,

Manoj Gilda.

Dearest Prabhu,

This was such a helpful post for me. Sometimes sadhana

seems to be entertainment of the ego rather than diminishing

the ego. My husband tells me that while sadhana will destroy

anarthas, vrittis and samsaras, it may also cause them to rise to

the surface. I sometimes feel too much "I "in my work and prayer.

I would like to know how others avoid this dangerous pitfall of

sadhana.

Another interesting point is that I can see it in others, but not in

myself. Please suggest any other remedies to SUBTLE EGO.

This is the first time, I am writing to this forum and there are

many sadhanas of which I have never heard. So you are

educating me, too. I greatly appreciate all the entries, especially

those that relate to general dharmic prinicipals which can apply

to any path. I found the group while searching for mrityunjaya

sadhana and believe the temple is located in Delhi.

Jai Gurudev!

I have always felt that most questions that we raise, the answers of

those are already given by Gurudev in advance in MTY just one or two

months ago.

For example your question about, how to ego and how to curb it.

Gurudev says "always remember the first day when you came to me for

diksha"

This will never let your ego rise.

Vande Nikhilam!

Somby, ur right... but different people understand the same thing

differently... so to put the right thought in their minds same things

needs to be said in different manner.

I see, most of Indian sciences r meant for the "Physical Suggestible"

(one's who have tendency to take in knowledge literally, directly,

these r emotional ppl, they can just follow) but todays world is a

world of "Emotional Suggestibles" (one's who have tendency to take in

knowledge inferentially, intellectually, these r one who can handle

emotions, even if they like to follow, doubts come in their mind).

Sometimes even I have problem here bcoz... to be honest i am an

intellectual myself and ppl make there own presumtions. People will

tell u to become more "trusting" but that will mean changing ur core

belief system all of a sudden, removing all the mental conditioning

till today, thats not possible, for intellectuals it takes time to

build faith. Since from ur words u sound like an emotional

suggestible, i would like to say one thing, plz dont fight urself,

dont try to deplete Ego in one go. "Evolution is better than

revolution", thats the truth, its a slow process. If u can end ur ego

then ur already enlightened, but it doesnt happen in one day. So plz,

just relax and concentrate on the work (sadhna/meditation) at hand,

loss of egotism happens by itslef. Sadhna is the technique (Tantra).

Techniques r for mind oriented people while total "Bhakti" is for

heart oriented ones. Still, some amount of faith is required by

intellectuals also or else u wont follow the technique given by

Master and without following technique u will just end being where u

were in the start. Persistence overcome every known obstacle to

mankind... but its possible only if u believe ur persisting with

right action, right? Atleast this much faith is required, thats the

science of believing.
