Cambridge University students petition to save Hindi, Sanskrit, Indian Studies

The University of Cambridge is on the verge of approving a report on 'the restructuring of the

faculty of Oriental studies', due to be discussed on Tuesday 30th January at the Senate

House. The findings of the report, if approved will have radical implications for the faculty

and significantly threaten the very existence of the department of South Asian Studies.

Undergraduate applications for Hindi and Sanskrit have already been suspended and

currently several South Asian Studies Papers are under threat. These proposals have been put

forward without any student consultation and have provoked outrage and heavy criticism

from university staff and academics worldwide. ?

We see the move to axe South Asian Studies at Cambridge as the thin end of the wedge:

already other 'small' subjects are facing closure, including Portuguese and Dutch. By

opposing the General Board's report you are supporting the many minority subjects

throughout Cambridge that make the university what it is - a place of diversity and academic

excellence. ?

?

Sign this petition to support the ongoing struggle to save the department of South Asian

Studies and maintain the academic integrity of Cambridge University.
