Guest guest
Many of my generation and generations before mine (born in 30s to 60s) in some ways are fortunate! We were born in times when there was a lot of stability! Yes, rules were changing and rulers too as India became independent and in the other side of the world rules were changing too and societies were experimenting with all kinds of things -- new ways of living, new values, new codes of conduct. Some were turning to music, others to drugs and yet others to new-age, which I have always seen as a teenage rebellion against traditional religion! Just like Rock music was a rebellion against traditional music! Similar rebellion is being witnessed by the world-society against many traditions and traditional standards! In a given society (and it becomes more complex as societies widen and embrace the globe as Internet seems to be forcing us to, as each day passes!) there would always be those who remain traditional (lakeer kay Faquir) and there are those who take stock of what is now and take a second look at the traditions (and if some rare ones of these cadre happen to be those who have lived TRADITION faithfully and now decided to expand their horizons, they must be paid special attention to! For they represent the 'cutting edge'! Nothing worthwhile and creative really gets created without that "cutting"! A knot of wood remains just an ugly piece of nature until She sends the one who sees the beautiful sculpture in that ugly knot of wood and he then through cutting and carving releases the 'Beautiful Image' that would have otherwise remained confined and even incarcerated in that ugly piece of wood! It is easy to scapegoat! Blame the movies, blame the TV, blame the teachers and even blame the parents or (pardon me for making waves!) the internet and the video games! If tradition were that powerful and the only PURE KNOWLEDGE, why and how could these recent sirens -- TV, movie, rock music etc etc take away the souls of youth? Why could tradition and classical conservatism who has been around for millenia or at least centuries suddenly lose its battle and is not screaming murder and scapegoating the very medium that some of the traditionalists use to blame the modern trend? Internet posts! Exhibit A, just in case there is a judge listening in! Younger generations are always smarter, wiser, than their forefathers and parents! Those who do not believe me, and are parents -- throw back your minds to those days when your children were born. Recall that first week, that first month of parenthood! Regardless of how they turned out to be, you have experienced a Pure Being in your life! What did you do with it, or to it? It is always easy to point fingers at others. I will give three examples: When people give up completely, they 'throw their hands up'. All fingers point upwards and they are blaming the Heavens and God! When they are accusing others, their index finger (and thumb) are pointing towards the one they are accusing, but the remaining fingers are pointing towards them (try it!). BUT the really bad situation is when we make an agressive fist! Civility at its rope's end! ALL fingers point towards the one who is making the fist and the thumb is pointing downwards! Human being is blessed (as opposed to other animals) to have a very important and functional thumb. It is the 'finger/digit' that separates us from all other animals, scientists tell us. The thumb is also considered the digit that represents venus/love/caring. When we make a fist, the thumb points down. It may represent the territory that we think we love and would die to protect (where we are standing!) but it also means that Venus/Love level is down, way way down! Interesting, isn't it, when we study the palm and its digits, this way! RR
