Happy Valentine’s Day

Mercury began his sojourn through Aquarius about 2 1/2

weeks ago. Mercury will remain in Aquarius until early

April. This begins the first of the three or

retrograde cycles for Mercury in air signs in 2007.

This is quite positive for all air sign people (Libra,

Gemini and Aquarius). Mercury does very well in air

signs, allowing for flexibility, humor quick thinking.

Actually, this transit is good for everyone.

 

However, the feared and dreaded Mercury retrograde

cycle began yesterday, just in time for Valentine’s

Day. Mercury is the trickster of the zodiac and he is

having a ball today. Mercury retrograde periods are

punctuated by miscommunication of all sorts. Yet,

retrograde planets have a unique strength to them.

That strength is the power of reflection. Retrograde

planets are closer to the earth, and therefore

brighter in the sky than at any other time. There is a

prominence to their energy when they move retrograde.

There are noticeable. Yet much of that notoriety

enters our mind because of their backward motion in

our life. Stated simply, the worldly things related to

retrograde planets in the birth chart mess up when

retrograde, making us pay attention to them. Like most

things in astrology the deeper truth behind retrograde

planets is shown when we ponder what we observe.

 

Planets operate on many levels, three levels

specifically. The spiritual — psychological — and

the physical, just like we do. The spiritual nature of

the planet is related to its pure knowledge, what the

Vedic people called sattwa. The psychological nature

of the planets is shown through the signs a planet

rules. This refers to its passionate nature, what the

Vedic people referred to as rajas. The physical nature

of the planet is shown through the houses, which are

related to earth. This is what the Vedic people called

Tamas. When a planet is retrograde is not actually

moving backwards, it only appears to be moving

backwards from Earth. Thus what the planet operates

relative to our position on Earth becomes disturbed.

That means the planet as a house ruler is not moving

forward. There is hesitation and not a lot of

confidence with using the energy of the retrograde

planet in the world. Yet there is a lot of reflective

power and knowledge due to its brightness and there

may be a lot of joy and desire experienced based on

the sign it occupies.

 

Too often astrologers and astrology students look for

shortcuts in their interpretations. “Is retrograde

good or bad?â€, the student will ask. Of course, it

all depends. Once we assess which quality of the

planet is compromised or enhanced in any situation,

the truth of how it will behave becomes revealed. With

retrograde planets in birth charts expect a

disturbance that awakens its energy in persons

consciousness, yet a certain amount of knowledge and

understanding operating through the ups and downs.

When a retrograde planet transits in the sky it is a

lot harder to predict its effect. But generally, with

his Mercury retrograde cycle expect some communication

challenges between now and March 7. These challenges

will awaken you in one way or another. Pehaps they

will not be severe, but the issue of your into

relational style and the detailed care and flexibility

necessary to communicate effectively will be revealed.

 

Ah yes, Valentine’s Day. We have this Mercury

retrograde and the moon joined Mars. EEEK!,.. But

seriously, there are several potential minefields

today. Not only is Mercury retrograde, it is joined

unpredictable Rahu and Uranus. This shows the

potential for some very erratic communication fueled

by some aggravated emotions. (Moon joined Mars).

Especially around issues of self-righteousness. (Moon

in Mars are in Sagittarius). Stay off the soapbox

today…
